Boring weekend 2 - Cabin air filter on the cheap

Shortly after Fingas74 & I finished up the scuba mod.. he said "Hey you ever replace your cabin filter?"

Me with the puzzled face "Umm no, and I dont have a clue where it is at..."
He kinda rolls his eyes... and shoves me out of the way to open the passenger side door.

This is what I saw:

So.. we shoved it back in since we didnt have any parts or supplies.. and the wheels starting turning for me.

So later that night (say 1am or so) I began to think.. Damn that thing was dirty!!

And the search began --- Let me first point out there is PLENTY of reading on this subject:

http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...er-change.html

http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...ir-filter.html

Cabin Air Filter

Then I saw this:
A/C Filter Change

and mentioned this:
Bosch/Micron Air cabin filter replacement - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

it pointed this:
Bosch Cabin Air Filters
Bosch Particulate Filters
(still too expensive -- I am froogle!)

the picture still haunted me..

Today I took my new found knowledge and headed to Walmart.

Returning home I promptly removed the filter and disassembled:

I thought the store bought filter would be a simple task as well:

but nope I was wrong:

unfazed -- I trudged on and cut out a chunk using the old filter as a template:

I put it in the bare air filter frame:

It looked pretty decent.

Aftermath:

Tools of the task:

And to freshen up the cabin even a bit more:

and that is my Cabin air filter on the cheap!!!

$3.88 for the 20x20x1 filter. And I can still get three more out of it.

Next time, I may simply cut off the cardboard outer trim trather than trying to remove it from the glue.. but over all the task took me 10 minutes tops!

Sorry no drinking for this task.

Good idea. You have inspired me to do the same. Where exactly is it located though?

At the beginning of Calichaos's post...he tell you that there is some reading to be done. If you read the following links, it will tell you where you will find it:

Damn thats alot of effort to save a few $$$$. I respect your ingenuity but I think the stock filter will keep more pollen, dust and polutents out. I had mine changed at the stealership and was hosed for $43.50 that included labor, owwcccchhh!! There must be a reuseable filter that can be cleaned over and over again.

I went the cheapest possible filter at Walmart this go around at $3.88. It was rated a "300".

They have them up into the "1200" range for $10.88.

If you trim the cardboard instead of trying to remove it from the trim the task is 5 minutes tops and you get 4 filters out of a 20"x20"x1" filter.

And yes.. you can use the washable kind... that way you could cut it once and just rinse the next billion times!

Hey my FJ cabin is minty fresh now for $3.88 and a "good job sweetie" from the wife. :>

If you have ever seen a clean stock filter you wouldn't think it would keep back much at all. You can almost see through it. I think that any but the blue fiberglass filters from walmart will catch as much or more pollen.

Hey your right! I just went out and pulled the filter and the damned thing is filthy after 5k, I will follow your advice and Do it myself ! I had some leaves and insects on the filter? I guess the crap isn't getting inside! I wonder if I can get a fine mesh screen and somehow install this to the outside air intake? This would really help to keep the bigger stuff out? anyone ring in?
