Rowlett Jeep club member killed in Colorado outing
For those of you with a copy of today's Dallas Morning News (08/04/06)- there's an article about the death of Jim Parker from Rowlett while on a Lone Star Jeep club outing in Colorado near Ouray.
It seems that grapefruit-sized, 75lb. rock dislodged from a 200ft. high cliff over Camp Bird Road and struck him in the head while driving the trail.
His passenger managed to steer the Jeep to safety and the other members of the club were able to assist and get everyone to the hospital.
Very sad story. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and any other Texas folk that may have known or wheeled with this man.
-Mike

Very sad. I am always telling kids, and some adults, to not throw rocks down the mountains. I don't think they realize what could happen. I hope that this was not the cause in this case.

Graham (gsgmac) and I were on the very same road the day before this happened. It's not the kind of road you would expect this to happen on but it just goes to show you. On the day it did happen I was wheeling with a buddy in the same general area and it was raining to beat hell, which caused numerous slides just about everywhere. I was more than a little concerned because of the way slides were occurring and washing across many of the jeep roads. There were more than a few sections I wasn't sure we were going to make it across. There was also a jeep tour that got stranded at the Tomboy mine just below Imogene Pass because of slides and had to spend the night there in their jeeps. They had to be rescued the next day by helicopter. I was driving back to Crested Butte after dropping my wife and son off at the Colorado Springs airport a couple of weeks ago and on the way down from the top of Monarch Pass in a driving rainstorm I had a huge boulder hit the pavement about 50 feet in front of me and roll part way across the highway. If it had hit my FJ it would have caved in the whole side of it, or if it had landed on the top it would have crushed the roof. Next time it's raining like that in the mountains I think I'll stay indoors.
