Does CO2 work well?

Well its time for me to think about on-board air.

I would at first, just drop in a compressor and put a tank in the back bumper area, but I see a lot of "US" use a CO2 tank and regulator to replace all of this stuff.
My question is this:

If you have any compressed air in your tire, and you add CO2 to the tire to air it back up, won't the water in the tire's air, mix with the CO2, and make carbonic acid? Carbonic acid eats most everything...

If you had any water in your air tool (just from the air), and used CO2 in it, wont the CO2 eat the air tool?

Does CO2 kill the life of your tools and tires?

I am thinking it might take a few years to see this damage, if it even happens, but still, I would stick with compressed air if this is a problem...

Your .02?

It took me a second!!! LMAO, sorry SkyKing it made me laugh.

Seriously though, it better not eat up tires, I used someone's tank on the last run to air back up.

Re: Does CO2 work well?

SkyKing, CO2 is in "air" anyway. I'm not an expert but the acid production you talk about is weak and I think only with water. I've never heard of any problems (not that I listen a lot...), but if it was a concern, I'd just air up with the CO2 (it's fast) then drain and use my compressor in a day or two when I was home. I really haven't heard of problems, but I may ask around.

Re: Does CO2 work well?

I am not a chemist, but I do make beer at home. All I know is that CO2 gas when it comes in contact with any water at all, makes carbonic acid, and it will eat stainless steel, and any rubber I have seen...

I have a 4.0 gas engine 4x4 that gets 8 miles to the gal. at best off road... Tell that to Al Gore...

Just don't want to kill my air tools or tires...

Re: Does CO2 work well?

I'm not a chemist either, but I think if CO2 were a problem, we'd know about it by now.
I do know that for my AF Reserve Job, we use CO2 to inflate the life rafts and life preservers on all of our aircraft. I highly doubt the military would use that much CO2 if it were a bad thing. Of course, this is the military we're talking about.

I went with CO2 for the speed and convenience issue, not to mention cost. We were able to put together a very good CO2 system for about half what a decent on board air system would've run us.

Re: Does CO2 work well?

I wouldn't worry about the CO2, lots of folks use it for offroading and powering tools. However...

OK, I haven't thought this through completely - just thought of it so bear with me. I have a small Argon/CO2 mix shield gas tank for my mig welder. I was considering putting a cheapie "spare air" tank in the void in front of the rear bumper. I know that Argon is used for filling the tires of luxury cars and that it is completely inert.

So, perhaps my Argon/CO2 mix tank could pull double duty and I could figure out a way to add a mig welder to my rig as well. I'd need to check out cost, pressure, volume, etc. before seriously considering this. I haven't searched widely, but haven't read about anybody doing this, so maybe theres a problem with it. Thoughts?

Re: Does CO2 work well?

The only reason to use CO2 is that the molecules are larger and your tire will not go flat as fast.

At the consumer level, the only reason there is any hype about it is to get people in the tire stores.

CO2 + water = H2CO3. You get some carbonic acid but not very much without something as a Catalyst. Even at that its an extremely weak acid. Carbonic acid is component of your blood. Hey, you could fill your air compressor with blood.

Sure you can use it but regular air is just as good. Plus regular air is easy to find.
