Being an old stick weldor, I wasn't too sure about the mig welders. Well, I bit the bullet and purchased a Miller 251 about a year ago. Man, I didn't know what I had been missing, this machine rocks! Running a argon and co2 mix with .035 solid wire there is little to no splatter or slag to chip off. Just brush with a wire brush and you are ready to paint. It welds up to 1/2" in a single pass. Miller Mig is the way to go.

My next purchase is going to be a Tig for the thin stuff. I hope it impresses me as much as the mig. Just watching weldors using the Tig it appears to be a lot like oxy/acel welding, just a little prettier.
TIG welding is a lot like oxy/acel welding only it is an electric torch and no flux is required. Another huge benefit is you have a foot pedal that adjusts the current to the torch. This allows you to adjust heat as you go rather than stopping to make adjustments like an oxy/acel setup.

Beware, once you get a TIG you will want a plasma cutter. The fun never stops!!

Re: Miller Mig Welder

I have been looking at plasma cutters too. I just don't have a large enough supply of dry air right now. I don't think my 30 gal. Craftsman will cut the mustard. I guess it is time to start looking for a 80 gal. compressor. Man, it never ends.

Re: Miller Mig Welder

That's my welder too.. As other mentioned I need more practice also.
For reference there is a site called smartflix that rents lots of instructional DVD's. They have several on Mig and Tig techniques. I learned quite a bit from the mig welding and chopper frame DVD's.
HTH.
