Filter wrench

Sorry for the cross post..

OK folks.. I've search and search, but found no specific info on this. So here goes; remember this is my first Toyota

The factory oil filter 90915-YZZD3 appears to need a 73mm, 14-flat end-cap wrench. I have a bunch of these and actually they appear to be a very well made filter. My problem is that when I went out to buy a wrench today, I forgot to take one with me and the folks around here could not tell me which one to buy. They even went to the shelf and pulled a replacement filter and couldn't find one to fit it either.

So my question is.. Will any 73mm, 14-flat end-cap wrench (autozone, advance, Walmart, etc.) fit the 90915-YZZD3? I did read in one of the threads that someone said they had a similar problem and got a wrench from the dealer that actually fit. I'll go out and look again tomorrow and take my filter with me. Thanks Ron

This looks like it should be the one, anyone useing it?
AST

PS: My Jeep tools ain't working for me. They're headed for EBAY

Re: Filter wrench

The kind of filter wrenches you're talking about have never worked well for me; I use either the retracting-pawl type or just a strap wrench.

Re: Filter wrench

I've never liked them either.. Always used flters with 1" nuts on them. I noticed the ToJo filters (90915-YZZD3) have pre-greased "O" ring. That is really nice.. After the old one is off, it'll be a piece of cake. I have several strap (universal) wrenchs, so that'll get it off. I am a -bit of a tool "freak" and like to have whatever I need. Thanks Ron

PS.. Other poster.. No screwdrivers in filters for me. I followed that advice once when I was a teenage (35 years ago) and it didn't work. Ever try to get a stuck filter off after it self-destructs from a screwdriver? It ain't pretty

Re: Filter wrench

I figured you were, because it is a royal mess.. I've been there too and it scares me to death every time. I can see that filter just tearing apart Ron

Re: Filter wrench

Wish I could help you out. I use a K&N filter that has a nut on the top. Makes it very easy to get on and off. Plus, I really like the filter. However, I did use a screwdriver on the original one and the mess wasn't that bad. Just be careful

Re: Filter wrench

Thanks, I'm a K&N man myself. It shouldn't be a problem after I get the original one off. When I started taking my TJ's to 7500mi (OCI) I would put on a new filter half way through. With the FJ I want to do rather a short interval (OCI) until I move the syn at 5000mi, so I'll go through a few filters early on. The Totota filter appears to be very well made and I have a few. I really like the pregreased "O" ring seal. That should be a true "hand-tight" filter. Both the Toyota and the K&N filters seem much better made than the big TRD filter. Ron

Toyota...

I'll tell you guys... Toyota sure has a lock on the market.. I went out today and took my Toyota filter. No (repete none) local auto parts shop has a filter wrench to fit the filter. The replacement filters (non-Toyota) are not the same size. A mobil1 filter is 76mm with the Toyota measuring 72.65mm. Looks like it's going to be the expensive TOY 730 from speciality tools, a trip to the dealer or the universal. I really don't like using one that destroys the filter, but that may be what I have to use. We'll see when I take it off. I'm assuming that I won't need anything going back on, with the "O" ring seal. "O" rings are a lot different from the flat seals on other filters. You don't want to flatten the "O" ring with too much force. We'll see.. Ron

Re: Filter wrench

I wrap a heavy sand paper around the filter since it is on top and have plenty leverage it works for me all the time.
