Hmmmm... Have you used one of these before or know someone who has? I suppose on the FJ that it would be protected by a skid plate, but I'd be a bit concerned about it having terrain clearance issues on other vehicles - wouldn't be good to knock it off or as you pointed out already, accidentally draining your oil out due to accidental unlatching of the lever.
Got one on the FJ and another on the Tacoma. It takes quite a bit to both push the lever and also rotate it to release the valve (the spring is very stout). On both vehicles the location of the drain valve is protected, moreso with the FJ, once I get the engine/tranny skid soon. So, I'm not concerned about the valve being knocked off.

I only mention the spring clamp, as a backup for exposed valves. If the drain plug was closer to the ground, or exposed, then yeah, I would forego the valve, obviously...

I guess I didn't completely understand how they workd until you just explained it. Actually, their not too expensive and it does appear that they would not be too exposed on the FJ. It might be worth it. Plus, you could always easily switch back to a drain plug if and when you needed to.
