2.41 a gal hell i filled up with mid grade tonight at 2.59 a gal so realistically a diesel would kick much ass and be a torque maker only draw back is not every station sells diesel

Wish I were as brilliant as you about diesels. You are the man Dan! And no I don't have my head in the sand. I owned a Dodge Cummins Turbo diesel truck when diesel gas was $1.10 a gallon. Now at $2.42 (truck stop price here in s.e.georgia) a gallon I just don't see the great advantage. My mileage was only 20-21 on this 4X4 crewcab, a nice truck w/lots of tork. No fun at fill ups.
Mr. Magic Dan, take a look at what the Jeep Liberty diesel is getting for mpg about 21 mpg. I am not saying there is not an improvement w/diesel mpg, just not enough of one to justify the diesel engine. Too each is own.
Hope you had a Merry Christmas! <grin>

OK, a little off the topic, but Im still Really excited about the possible foray Toyota is making into the mainstream of the diesel market. Obviously they see some future for diesels and hopefully they can do their majic and have it out sooner than later. Thankfully we live in a capitalisitic society where demand drives the market. Again, Im eargerly awaiting a diesel FJ.

I had to reply to this.
First, in regards to the Jetta, my cousin also runs one of these and swears his mileage is almost 50 on the interstate and up to 44 in mixed driving. By the way, he also has a Cummins-powered pickup as he states, "diesel is the way to go."
Second, the Liberty diesel is a disappointment, except in torque. What did we expect from a US manufacturer though ? Even the strong five cylinder Mercedes diesels which they use in those big 3/4 and 1 ton Sprinter delivery trucks get almost 30 mpg with ease. JEEP made a poor choice. I am confident that Toyota, Honda, Nissan and others are working on cleaning up engines for release in the US. If they are anything like the strong, efficient engines used in Europe, then sign me up.
Last, in regards to the full-size, Dodge Cummins getting only 20-21 mpg, you are a lucky man. Apparently you do not realize that that is better mileage than any 1/2 ton gas engine-equipped pickup will normally get in mixed driving (in the real world as opposed to the optimistic world of window stickers). In addition, you can pull a heck of a load and not cut your mileage in half like my '04 Silverado with gas 5.3 which drops from 16.5 average to about 10 with my 14' box trailer behind it.
My dad's Cummins 1 ton consistently gets 17.5-18 mpg, that includes towing a trailer at least once a week. This, however, is less than what his 3/4 ton got. It would consistently get 20 mpg, but since the 1 ton is heavier, it gets slightly less.
Anyway, back on topic. I thought I heard a rumor that the new Tundras were getting a Cat diesel in the future. Maybe I'm wrong. The new Titans will have a diesel as well.
You can't beat a Cummins, but these new entries should be very interesting to see. I think Nissan and Toyota will really shake up this market, especially in Texas. The majority of people down here drive diesel trucks, at least in my area.
I think that the diesel would be a great idea. As a transport refrig guy i work on Jap and only Jap diesels. First of all, north america has the worst diesels anywhere. Our diesel fuel is on par of that in Vietnam.(No offence intended) I have seen Honda turbo diesels, Peugoets', and Reno's. All are so quiet that you can't even tell they are diesel. No smoke and they almost rev like a gas pot.....4-5 grand rpm!
I have had profesional experience with Isuzu's. 2.2L DI......try 1500000, 2000000km's to an engine. Not even valves being set. I would love to see a diesel in the FJ.
A stock VW Golf can hit the 60mpIg. Even my 86' CRX did 51mpIg once.
Its time for diesel smoke and dangerous curves.....
Just my 2 cents, but we have an 2006 Jetta TDI and we get about 42 combined driving and easily push 48 -50 on the highway. The real world driving we get is a lot better than what volkswagen advertises for the vehicle. I think the sticker or epa rating was 38 city and 42 highway, but we've gotten much better in both.
I have the 6MT and I'm also getting in the 15 - 16 range, but I knew that going in and I still love the FJ more every time I drive it. Got mine in April. Be Safe and thanks for your service
