Diesel update

I ran across these articles stating that GM sold their 7.9% stake in Isuzu last summer and Toyota just bought a 5.9% stake in December, primarily for access to diesel technology and engineering.

I would too, but with the newer regulations for diesels it may be a while to see the FJ.

Re: Diesel update

OMB - obviously you haven't driven a "modern" diesel. They are quite, VERY fuel efficient and have some serious "go" now. Only smell is when you pump the diesel. Go drive a Mercedes E320CDI and you'll see what I mean. Stock their 0-60 times are in the sub 7 second range (easily) as their little 3.0 liter diesel puts out pretty close to 400lb/ft of torque. That is a bunch more than the 4.0 liter motor in our FJ's. I drove this motor in the ML320CDI and it was a nice package with excellent fuel economy and very quiet.

Only noisy diesel I've owned lately is my Excursion and that is only until it is warmed up. It only "stinks" when I set the ECU chip on stun. Then it smokes a bit until the big turbo is really spun up. Diesels are the proverbial have your cake and eat it too when it comes to performance with good fuel efficiency.

Re: Diesel update

Diesels are perfect for their intended use. They are not for everyone as well as V6, or V8's are perfect for their intended use.

Diesels can be set up for economy and performance at the same time and work great in everyday use if you want the best of both worlds.

Economy with a diesel??? Not sure this statement is accurate with diesel fuel at $2.41 a gallon?

I will take a gas engine any day over a diesel for performance. Just an observation...

Cheers!

You would be surprised at how much economy I do get in my diesel Jetta.

When I drive it like I stole it and you are in pursuit I get 42-44mpg at 80-85 mph. and in town I get 33-35mpg.

If I'm trying to get fuel mileage I slow down a bit and I get 47-49mpg, and 36-38mpg.

I'll also put a smile on your face when you see how really quick this little 90 horse motor is.

Earl- I understand you like your Jetter, some where I lost the connection in comparing a VW jetta diesel with a possible FJ future diesel. The FJ weighs in at over 2 tons, and is four wheel drive and stream line or areo dynamic its not.

Still, I can appreciate your hopeful, wishful thinking. Still at $2.41. And I believe the last fuel economy stats I saw on a Jetta was 35 city/42 city. Ya think 47-49 might be a bit of a stretch there Earl?

Cheers!
