This time the writers actually purchased one and drove it for a while. They nailed the ride and it being as good an on-road vehicle as off-road.
Most of others I have read involve what seems like presumptive reporting; writing what they expect they will find. The Edmund's piece involved input from several editors who drove the FJ on more than one occasion.
looks like SOMEONE in the press get's it. Took long enough.

Edmunds opinions mean something to me as these people drive the vehicle for awhile, not just a one-off for a few minutes. Consumer Reports and the likes pretty much suck for reviews. For vehicle ratings from member feedback, that's a different story.
Good job Edmunds!!!

One error I noticed in the Edmunds write-up: Four-wheel-drive models don't come standard with traction control ....
They don't come standard with (A-TRAC) Active Traction Control, but (TRAC) Traction Control is standard on all Toyota SUVs as part of the STAR safety system, which also includes (EBD) Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, (ABS) Anti-lock Braking System, (BA)Brake Assist and (VSC) Vehicle Stability Control.
Some of the later introduced high-end models (like the Highlander Hybrid and Camry Hybrid) also have a central processor that handles the computing to control all of these systems with one "brain" called (VDIM) Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management. It responds much quicker when the operator is in danger of losing control and utilizes a core mounted "g" sensor to measure what the vehicle is actually doing dynamically, then correcting as needed.

Edmund's review really hit the "nail on the head" concerning the FJ's brakes. Two (2) of the long term road test reports mentioned that the brakes are "overly sensitive when modulating the pedal at a crawl". I experience the same problem when trying to graduate the brake pressure for a smooth stop. Instead, I usually end up with a lurching halt. Anybody else notice this behavior with the brakes?

It just took me some time to get used to the FJ's brakes.

The braking system is a pressurized system similar to the 1990-1995 Range Rover system. It works a lot like air brakes on a Semi and requires a very careful touch to modulate the braking. You can hear the servo "pumping up" soon after startup (if parked for a good while) if you listen for a little mechanical hum and sometimes you can feel the "kickback" through the pedal if your foot is resting on it when it pressurizes.

It took me about a week to get used to the brakes. I initially thought they were a tad sensitive but then realized that the brakes in my Durango never actually stopped the truck when they should have.

On the other hand, my brother and I swapped test drives on Monday, his an 05 F150 crew cab 4wd. The first time I used the brakes it seemed the pedal went all the way to the floor before the calipers grabbed! Bro advised this was chalked up as "nature of the beast," from on-line threads from others experiencing the same behavior. Good brakes make good neighbors.
