I heard of a 2016 or 2017 NEW FJC "Prototype" vehicle. Diesel Option Available!

I just heard from a Toyota Salesman, at a Dealership, that a NEW Version of an FJC type vehicle is being "Prototyped" for maybe release in 2016 or 2017!!!!! Possibly even having a Diesel! HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD THIS. We were told by a Toyota Salesman, even though he had two FJCs sitting there. And we are still thinking of trading our FJC in for one of his new ones. Especially "before" Maria retires. All of a sudden, this salesman said "we "might" want to wait because "might" be "Building and selling" a even better "Prototype" of a FJ Cruiser type of vehicle. Ready for sale in 2016 or 2017. Especially if we were gamblers.

He told us this while we looking at his last two new FJCs. Which he "might" have been able to sell us one right then. Which seems to make the "prototype" theory more believable in my eyes, He also stated several times, a new Tundra WILL be available with a "Diesel". That Toyota wants to get out in front of this market! Do you think this is believable????? You Tell me?

But; Major questions remain!
Is Toyota really going build it within that short time frame? Are they going to sell it in the USA? Is it going to be too-long, too-wide, to-heavy for wheeling? OR will Toyota start the "LandCruiser" route with the "Prototype" put more luxurious items in it and charge a bunch more money for it?

Whatever! It put a screeching halt to our thinking about purchasing any of those FJCs from him or anyone. Until I can try and get some REAL "somewhat" reliable and credible evidence to believe Toyota will build it! Anyone???

Nope. Not happening.
Salesman don't know much about what they have on the lot let alone anything coming in the future.
Salesman are like Mushrooms. They are fed S**t and kept in the dark!

Buy the FJ now and IF something comes out in the future you want, trade her in. Less than 1,000 (857 according to cars.com) new FJ's out there right now and less every day.

There would be a lot more buzz if Toyota was to release a new diesel for a NA.

I don't believe the salesman.

I have seen promised/hyped/maybe cars come along from various manufactures for many years. Cars we were actually told would be built by "higher ups" at various manufacturer's.
A lot of those cars were never built. I give this possibility, of seeing a new diesel powered FJ Type vehicle, zero to chit chance in hell by the time frame you mention.

I'm not saying we won't see a diesel..... It just won't be in anything like a FJ type vehicle.

The US sales numbers in goodcarbadcar.net speak volumes; after a two and a half year "excitement" phase, where Toyota sold 138,000 FJ's, the sales fell off a cliff, dropping to a meager 13K year until this year. Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

Year Jeep Wrangler Jeep Wrangler
U.S.*Sales Canadian*Sales
2006 80,271 5090
2007 119,243 9834
2008 84,615 12,137
2009 82,044 7271
2010 94,310 11,062
2011 122,460 15,636
2012 141,669 18,996
2013 155,502 18,578
2014 YTD * 147,733 19,987

Year Toyota FJ Cruiser Toyota FJ Cruiser
U.S.*Sales Canadian*Sales
2006 56,225 4919
2007 55,170 4901
2008 28,668 2630
2009 11,941 899
2010 14,959 797
2011 13,541 639
2012 13,656 726
2013 13,131 656
2014 YTD * 13,602 602

In other words, Jeep sells about as many Wranglers PER YEAR, as Toyota sold FJ cruisers over a nine year period! And that is just counting the Wrangler, NOT the Jeep totals per year.

Hummer couldn't unseat Jeep, Toyota can't unseat Jeep, and it's just throwing good money after bad to even try. Don't think there will be an FJ III if the number crunchers have a say on it in Tokyo.

But that's ok, because I am left with a genuine off-road go anywhere vehicle with the production figures of a Rolls-Royce and the reliability of a Rolex. Now out of production and headed towards unobtanium status. Not too shabby.:grin

If and when Toyota ever does decide to market a clean TDI here in the states I most likely will have a Diesal power plant in my FJ for many years by then. I wish I had the money to import a used Toyota 3L Hilux crew cab 4X4 solid axle like they have available across the rest of the world. It's just a matter of time I guess but I may not be wheeling when I'm 70!

V8 supercharged with a solid front axle
Also lifted from the factory with King coil-overs on all four corners
Ready for 40" tires with no rubbbbbb

That's what I heard?

Re: I heard of a 2016 or 2017 NEW FJC "Prototype" vehicle. Diesel Option Available!

Sounds unlikely to me.... Diesel would make sense for the RSA and AU markets where it has remained on sale but the volume is so small I doubt it will happen. I've been told Toyota is getting away from diesel altogether.. likewise I doubt that will happen for the RoW market for 70 Series Land Cruiser in 2nd & 3rd world markets but think it will for small cars in Europe.

If there was a new FJ on that timescale there would be some evidence of a mule or prototype or even show concept by now?

my brother works for Toyota corporate in L.A he said that if there is a prototype it will be unveiled next week at the L.A Auto Show, he was kinda surprised I asked him so maybe.... a diesel would be ideal considering the new "CAFE" requirements for 2016

My neighbor says Nissan will have a Diesel Titan for 2015, so I'm sure Toyota won't be behind the mark against Nissan. The first diesel USA Toyota will be a Tundra. Mark my words :jester: The only other competition are full sized American trucks, who Toyota has been trying to compete with for years. They have nobody to compete with for anything but a full sized truck so I don't see them developing diesel trucks in the USA, ever, except for the Tundra. They really have no reason, and I'm not sure there is any demand for a diesel 4x4 in all reality from anyone other than enthusiasts who only buy a small % of overall vehicle sales.

I don't understand why everyone has a hardon for diesel either. I prefer gas!

Oh so you herd it from a salesman ? Never mind it's not going to happen. They don't know squat about future production vehicles .
x2 I've found they hardly know squat about what vehicles they have in their own lot let alone a future production.

I've been thinking about this for a few days now, and have come to the conclusion that yes, while there have been many created before it, this is without a doubt the most rediculous thread ever created by anyone on this forum, or any other forum like it.

I find it deserving of ridicule that you even put a few days thought into it....

Re: I heard of a 2016 or 2017 NEW FJC "Prototype" vehicle. Diesel Option Available!

So, with no future FJs on the horizon, what would be a suitable alternative, from the current offerings of vehicles, when it comes time to replace a wonderful, reliable, go-everywhere, cannot-be-rebuilt 2007 FJ?

My preference is for something equally fun, capable and reliable.

Toyota Forerunner? Jeep Wrangler? ???

At 95,000 miles, I don't anticipate needing to replace it anytime soon (despite the numerous offers I receive to sell it).

going to have to say currently the 4Runner TRD Pro would fit my bill.

I just don't need the extra room.
