I live just down from the Toyota development/design center in Torrance. I've noticed quite a few people without any feet hobbling around lately. Let me re-state what "White Rim" wrote... "they blew off their feet with a 12 Guage shotgun!!!". The Special Edition is truly a Special Ed model of the most significantly advanced new Toyota to come out in years!!!

I really think the marketing people shot themselves in the foot with the black roof.
The white roof is the essential visual branding ingredient of the FJ, and they have diluted it hugely. It would be like Nike changing the shape of their logo, or Ford changing the color of its oval (which might not add much harm to them though, the way things are going in Dearborn)
THe white roof IS the logo of the FJ, not the stylized FJ letters.
I guess they just could not make a blacked out one with a white top and have it not really look bad. But they could have come out with some really cool color like RED or GREEN for the TRD and could have kept the roof.

The majority of people will end up replacing all those parts if they're actually into racing or any other type of off-roading. I can't believe they didn't at least put a suspension lift on it. So basically the TRD model will have, darker rims, better tires, no white roof (wtf?!aiosjkghaweiouuugjhr!!!!), cheap shocks, and some airbags. I pity the fool who would waste $7300 for those options.
Then I could proceed to change the wheels, tires, shocks ... and probably just about everything that is special about it.
I do like the note about tying the A-Trak and Locker together - will do that mod now for sure ....
Maybe Toyota will come out with a Technical Service Bulletin or factory upgrade for the A-Trak and Locker combo. I read the posts and it looks easy but....
Oh come on guys, you're being too hard on it. Just think, if you were one of the lucky 3200 that bought one of these SE models and didn't change anything on it for the next 30-40 years you will surely be able to sell it for some nice coin at Barrett-Jackson.
Now, show me the retard that actually thinks they are going to do that and I'll happily hit them with my not-so-special VB MT FJ w/ sweet WHITE roof. Wow...Toyota really missed the bus on this one. Oh well...just makes me even more happy to own a 'normal' FJ.

YES...My left foot gets sad if it doesn't have a clutch pedal near by...
Messing with the white roof is a mistake by Toyota's TRD group - its perfectly fine for end-users to do this, but changing the roof in the first year of production for a special edition is ham handed at best.
"Strive for perfection in everything.
Take the best that exists and make it better.
If it doesn't exist, create it.
Accept nothing nearly right or good enough"
Make it one more that doesn't like the body color roof idea of the TRD-it should be white as that is one of the things that make it the descendant of the FJ 40 and not just another SUV. The pricing I understand-you have have to place a premium to make it exculsive and futher that by limiting the amount you make but this had to be tough for TRD to come out with something that hasn't been far surpassed by many of you guys already. Toyota does have to market their product with the understanding that it will be used mostly on road for going back and forth to work, etc(gotta pay for this thing somehow!) so they couldn't go full on Moab/ Rubicon/ Baja with a production vehicle.......but we can!
