Pep Boys sells these, as well as 'attachments', to build an overhead console.
I was exicted when I first saw them but then I opened boxes for a few of pieces... sorry - I don't think you'll be impressed.

You're right, very disappointed in the very dim lighting it puts out. I liked the way it attached to the head liner at first with plastic velcro strips and a couple of sticky strips but as soon as it got cold out I hit a bump and the unit fell into my lap...lol. $30 wasted!

I found it online for about $15 including shipping. Attachment does stink and since I do a fair amount of offroading, I secured it to the headliner. I also will be hard wiring it in and replaced the bulbs with LED. It makes a world of difference.
