Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

Perhaps Toyota needs to remember the past and how they became
number one.

Once upon a time, there were car companies whose business strategists
rallied to the cry of 'planned obsolescence' and who planned on cars that
started developing serious 'wear out' issues around 60,000 miles.

Those companies were number one and two in the world.

As a strategy, profiting from problems you create (rather than solve)
for your customers is bankrupt. Perhaps literally.

I don't doubt, though, that somebody will come up with a more
durable windshield in the after-market, which will cost less than
the OEM one.

Corporate arrogance being what it is, we might have better luck
lobbying the aftermarket suppliers to give us a product that's
so good that people would pull out perfectly good stock ones
in its favor.

My first FJ had two dings... The new one doesn't have any yet but I'm avoiding big trucks, highways, and flying objects.

Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

An update on my water balloon (!) damage:

Windshield replaced.
Thanks Toyota of Dallas for expediting ( 20 days) one day install.
The guilty kid's dads dropped off 2 checks covering my loss, $1350.00.

Back on the mean streets of Dallas. Now let's see if this one lasts longer...

Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

My windshield has two rock chips in it. One is going to start spreading, I can tell. Out of all the other vehicles I have owned before this I have only had one cracked windshield (Ford Ranger) and one small chip (Chevy C10). We are probably talking about 500,000 miles.
My FJ with 11,000 miles already has two chips.

Gee, I am beginning to feel left out with so many cracked FJ windshields. My FJ’s windshield is fine but, I am thinking about taking a ball ping hammer to it, just sooos I can fit in with the FJ broken windshield crowd.

Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

Just noticed mine was cracked after work. I have about 2,100 miles on it and it's a couple of months old. The crack looks like it starts underneath the windshield molding on the passenger side and shoots about three inches toward the center of the windshield. No apparent rock chip, which would make sense in causing the crack in the first place.

Have had flat windshields in the past, 1991 & 2001 Cherokee Sports and a 2004 Element and never had a crack look like it originated from underneath the molding.

In this small sample, 31% seems like a pretty high percentage for FJC's to have cracks.,

Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

I win the prize I think (What do I get! What do I get!). I'm currently waiting for my second replacement windshield. The second rock impact also damaged the hood a bit - small damage but it needs to be repainted.

I've posted previously about the apparent windshield problem. My opinion is that Toyota has a problem with the OEM glass (made by Lami-Safe). My windshield installer (who I now know too well) says that 07 RAV4 windshields are also being broken at an unusually high rate.

I'm currently waiting for the aftermarket PPG windshield. They requested more information from me when I mentioned that the Toyota windshield had broken on me twice. Heard nothing since.

Not sure about the US pricing. It seems a bit high. The cost of the Toyota OEM windshield in Canada is $484 at the dealer plus trim parts, etc. The complete costs to replace my first windshield was $870CDN give or take a few bucks.

I have sent a letter to Toyota Canada expressing my concerns about the windshield. Nothing back from them yet.

Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

200 miles (mostly to and from the dealer)...and already a few rock chips from very small rocks kicked up by semi-trucks on the freeway. This sucks!
