Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

Everyone is saying prices are well over $1,000 but I noticed if you do a quote at safelite.com for a "non-insurance" claim their regular price is $755. Seems high but not as high as what others are saying they paid. Maybe safelite is using the PPG windshield...?

They do not have the glass, thet still have to get it from the dealer.
When the time comes for them to install, they don't have the glass, so the price means zilch.

They may be using the price for the PPG non-OEM windshield. Anybody had one of those installed yet?

Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

What I found out is this .... sure the windshield may be $755, but then they have to order this piece and that piece and so on because this windshield comes out like no other and about every little supporting piece is destroyed getting the sucker out! For instance, the top white trim piece can't be saved. A new one is glued onto the windshield. Anyways, you add up all the other pieces which "will" be needed and the extra labor for doing all this and bam .... $1,200. You can bet your a$$ the second time mine was cracked I drove directly to the nearest glass repair shop before it got any worse.

Paid $225 for the diamon-fusion coating today. Hopefully that means I won't have to find out how much a replacement windshield costs...

This is partially correct. Actual replacement cost for my windshield purchased a month ago:

Toyota's FJ Windshield part # 56101-35070
1060.38 + tax to be exact. 120.00 for install. Toyota didn't charge my dealer freight for th part. (I have heard a cheaper price from Canadian owners not sure why.) Took 20 days to get the windshield.

Toyota of Dallas successfully removed trim parts and reinstalled them. Their glass guy already had experience with the FJ.

Also, I just changed my comprehensive insurance for the FJ from 250 to 100 deductable. Total change in cost was 6 bucks total/6month term. Easy decision. ( my ins is Progressive , by the way).

Hope this helps.

Are you sure that this will make your windshield less prone to rock chips? I think you just wasted $225 there....

msc: The PPG windshield will be available very soon. I have a part # (posted previously) that I got from PPG a couple of weeks ago. I have it pre-ordered through the glass shop. Still uncertain if it will be an improvement, however, the owner of the glass shop has said that the OEM glass by Lami-Safe is "middle of the road" at best. Crossing my fingers at this point.

Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

I started a thread Consumer Reports - Windshield Assessment? where I describe contacting Consumer Reports, provide a contact link, and in that thread ask whether you think it appropriate to contact Consumer Reports about this matter, and if so, whether you (using the provided link) contacted them? I didn't want to put the post here and hijack this thread (because I ask for replies in my post). Please check the post and reply to it there (not here). Thanks!
