Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

I just registered one.

And yes, mine looks exactly like the picture.

One thing I am curious about is how many people have selected 'no, they dont have a cracked w/s' that now may have one. It took mine almost a year to develop the crack. Based on the current poll numbers, 1/3 of the people that participated have this defect. Does that really constitute a defect? My guess is that Toyota will only own up to it if it is somehow percieved a safety issue, which it likey isn't.

That's been one of the problems with this poll from the beginning. Many people have posted that they need to change their vote. It's an inherent problem in polling...

LOL, Thats what my stats instructor would of said.

But seriously, are all you guys registering complaints with NHTSA or not? This poll has over 500 broken windshield and only 40 some complaints.

Home | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) | U.S. Department of Transportation
I agree... why aren't people reporting? Do you want this problem addressed?

You can do it anonymously if that's what holding people back...

ok so we are a bunch of cry babies, I would be curious what it costs to replace jeep and hummer windshields...
It costs $110 to replace a 97 Jeep TJ windshield, thats why they don't complain about it.

Well, I think the poll is inflated.

Otherwise more than 40 of us would have registered a valid complaint with NHSTA.

Don't get me wrong, I believe its an issue, and it certainly is for the 40+ that took the time to register a valid complaint. But I also believe the issue is overstated on this board.

For this forum, all you have to do is register multiple email addresses and vote as many times as you like. At NHTSA you have to enter a VIN#.
I don't think it is inflated at all, it is only an assumption about the multiple voting, and while we're assuming, it is also possible there are people multiple voting on the no breakage side to minimize the issue. So that is a wash. What IS understated is the number of breakages, there are numerous posts that state they originally voted no breakage and then later had the windshield break and then could not change their vote. So, I think the poll is relatively accurate, especially based on the number of FJ's around here that I see with broken windshields (2 cracks and 4 or 5 stars on mine included). Also keep in mind that there are currently 446 single breakages, and 59 MULTIPLE breakages, so if you just count the mulptiple breakages as twice, that comes to 564 windshield breaks out of 1499 poll responses, which is over 37 percent. So, lets minimize that and say 25% just for kicks. There are over 80,000 FJ's on the road, with 25% breakage you have 20,000 broken windshields. That would tend to make me believe there is a problem. I don't know what it is, but I do think it is an issue.

To me, having a Jeep, I asssumed it was going to break, my TJ had 4 windshields in 10 years, and all but about 9 months of that it was broke. What did surprise me was how easily the FJ windshield cracked the first time (2 days after purchase), essentially a glancing blow from a small piece of gravel (second one was an almost head on hit by a 2" diameter rock kicked up by a car passing me). And the biggest surprise was the $1,400 replacement cost I was quoted. If I were to have replaced the windshield both times it cracked, that would have been $2,800 in only 3 months of ownership - an astounding 10% of the vehicle cost.

As for the numbers who complained to the NHTSB, I don't see it as insignificant that there are 5 times more FJ complaints than the next model, and 40 times more than anyone else. Taking it to that level is simply something most people don't want to deal with. You can see by the numbes that not a lot of people complain across the spectrum, so to see that many complaints by one vehicle IS significant.

Re: New Windshield Poll - Please Respond

just got the run around from the dealer. So I guess I am going to live with the crack until there is aftermarket glass available. I found it interesting that I was told I was the first one they'd seen at this dealer. After I saw I was going to get no where, I asked who they contract for their glass. They told me..I called the company and asked if they have done FJ glass relplacements locally and was told they had done a number of them...hmmmm

Lawyers are normally on the bottom of my list, but I hope this class action suit eats their f'in lunch. They are making an inferior product and will never own up to it because it really isnt a safety issue. My first Toyota and I have been nothing but satisfied until now. sucks..........

Look, all I'm say is if your windshield is damage take two minutes to report it on NHTSA. There should be hundreds just off this forum, right? So either the poll is BS or folks just rather let it go.
Actually, I had a lot of problems trying to get it to work. I had to try it again on another day. I've heard others say the same thing... that they got stuck and couldn't finish... it kept reporting missing info that was entered...
