Just get the chip repaired-insurance should cover it at no charge. If it cracks get a new windshield-insurance should cover that too if you have glass coverage. You are better off getting it repaired, sooner the better because it will be a cleaner repair-less visible beause dirt and crap won't get in the crack. Put a piece of clear scotch tape over it until you get it fixed to keep it clean. If you need a windshield, ask for LOF or PPG glass- i would stay away from Safelite-very cheap and lots of them are wavy and distorted. if you take it to the dealer, they are going to have it done by a vendor so you might as well call a reputable glass shop and they can do it in your driveway-or your parking lot at work.
Alot of people think when they get a chip they should just get a new windsield but you are better off with the repair. You keep the factory seal. If you use a QUALITY glass shop they should do a good job and use proper methods and adhesives. If you use some off the wall glass guy you take your chances.

I've owned my FJ for less than 6 months now and I am getting my 2nd replacement windshield tomorrow. Bought Diamon Fusion with replacement warranty from the dealer when I bought the FJ (Felt like a big sucker at the time). They replaced the first windshield about a month ago for absolutely no cost. Diamon Fusion turned out to be the best $400 bucks I've spent in a while. The invoice from the glass company to Diamon Fusion was for $960 bucks for the first one. Hopefully all will go smoothly again tomorrow. Only stickler is that you have to go back to the dealer to have the DF reapplied (for free) to the new windshield within 2 days of the replacement or the warranty is voided. The warranty is for 4 years so if my math is right and the trend continues, 2 windshields per 6 months times 4 years times $960 minus the $400 I spent on DF equals $14,960 worth of windshield repair savings. YIKES!!!
UPDATE:
No issues! The windshield was replaced for free (Another $900 expense avoided) and had the Diamon Fusion reapplied for free. Looks like I'm set for another couple of months.

I got my first windshield chip the day I took home my FJ. And its been one or two a month since then (about 12 months). I think my FJ is a rock magnet.
Here is the brief story of my experience with FJ windshield.
The front windshield on my 2007 FJ Cruiser (the vehicle was purchased in June 06) had cracked on the left, driver side, lower corner. It was occurred under stress and confirmed by technician at Toyota service in NY. Within two days the new windshield was received and installed on my vehicle under manufacture warranty. While installation of the new glass Toyota technician damaged the hood and front cowl panel on my vehicle. All above mentioned is reflected on the repair order receipt. I made an attempt to fix the hood, front panel, and reseal the windshield on my vehicle due to the wind noise coming through the seal. I made five -six visits to this particular dealership. It seams to me that Toyota tech personal can't solve this problem properly.
Please take in to your attention that the minor problem with just replacing the windshield came up a major problem. Every and each time, when I bring my vehicle to fix this problem, Toyota personal are damaging my car more and more, and the problem with wind noise is still there and in addition my vehicle has more scratches and dings.
I had driven the car with another tech, which came from Toyota NJ headquarters. He found the problem obvious: wind noise exist during driving even less than 30 mph...He told me that he will good take care the problem and even can make a body shop job with replacing and painting the front hood cove (which been damaged during the glass installation). I have refused it at that time... However in February 2008, I drove my FJ to the close mall for Saturday shopping for my son. I had left the FJ on parking lot. When we came back to the lot, I hardly noticed the hair thin crack on the windshield (?!). I asked my son to look at it closer and he confirmed there is the crack. I just want to notice that this exact place where the first crack was occurred and definitely this is Stress issue again. I did not call Toyota dealer for this matter and just forwarded all my paperwork, repair orders to Attorney Daniel Goldsmith Ruggiero (lemonauto.com)… He took all previous facts into consideration and turned the case to the lemon, during manufactory problem of this windshield issue. I had provided some pictures of the last crack of the windshield and he reply: “The pictures are great. Wow, that is some crack! There clearly is a structural issue here… “
Little later the lawyer sent the supplemental demand letter to Toyota and they was agree to buy my car back.
Dan Ruggiero handled this case professionally and in timely manner, but in fact I do not have my lovely FJ any more and not sure if I ever will again.
It was sadden experience with my FJ which had only 14,000 miles on it.
Got my first rock chip second week I owned it. Had it repaired the next day, which so far has prevented it from cracking. I admit, though, that I am nervous about the windshield over the long term.
We bought the Cruiser used and it had PPG replacement glass. Recently, a small rock chip was repaired and in two weeks it has not spread.
Have had lots of vehicles(over 50), including Wranglers with upright windshields. They chipped as well.
I chose to read the forums before I bought the Cruiser so I was aware of the complaints about the windshield being a rock and bug magnet.
Living/driving where we do, the windshield is going to get hit on a fairly regular basis. The glass shop we go to, which has replaced several other Cruiser windshields, suggested I have the chips repaired as soon as they occured as I have done with my other vehicles. Aesthetics aside, unless it effects my vision/safety, another replacement windshield was not recommended.

I voted no awhile ago and jinxed myself. Just had the windshield replaced today. Had to wait for some special part. Is there actually a part for the windshield not common to other cars or were they full of it?
