Well, after the whole merged-thread fiasco of 2006, I feel the need to appease some members with a new windshield thread. I understand it's important to show Toyota that this is indeed a design flaw, and I realize that a lot of people are relying on this data.
And please...don't ask me to merge this with anything else
Share your windshield stories here. If you'd like the poll titles changed to what they used to be, I can do that as well...just remind me.
Thanks.
Former thread here sans poll (for reference to comments)
I have three chips that formed a long horizontal crack. I work construction so this is somewhat of an occupational hazard. I have however told everyone my windshield kills more bugs then Terminex.
Hi everyone. New kid on the block.
:flame: Well , I am just thrilled with all the problems you guys are having, I can't wait for mine to be ruined by a tiny rock.:flame: As I mentioned before, the xB has worse problems, and now the rav4 -- Toyota needs to get their sh*t together quick:slant:
My xB has a broken one also and the dealer came up with some CRAP... finding a small rock ding and they said that made the 7 inch break in the windsheild... My FJ is 4 weeks old and so far so good...
Wimpy causes? How about the fact that my winshield crack was from a freakin' bug! Talk about PO'd. 30K and the windshield is taken out by a bug. OK, it was a really big bug but seriously, what kind of crap is that. :flame:
Had a chip with small cracks. I had it fixed, but I am not at all confident with it. I'm bringing it back tomorrow and will have them do it again. It cost $30.
It already looks pretty weather beaten, and it only has 7000 miles on it. Winter has not quite began in my parts, but the cold is setting in rapidly.
Hi Bostonian - What are the chances of sending all these posts on the inferior glass of the FJ to ''whoever at Toyota'' in Japan?. Someone in charge of production who would actually do something about this serious problem and hopefully issue a recall to all owners!!? ASAP as this is getting rediculous as to the huge number of owners experiencing problems! Who and where can we send these to?
At $1250 for the windshield and molding strip+ clips + install, and most of us have our insurance company pay for it..What makes you think Toyota will do anything about it ? They are probably laughing their asses off right now and gives the guy who designed the windshield a big bonus....Thats where they are making their money....
All of this implies intentional collusion and defrauding the public by knowingly doing this. It also implies a paper trail of the decisions to do this.
Toyota would be opening themselves up to several major civil and criminal law suits from doing what you say. Having worked with Toyota manufacturing on a few projects over my career I can't see this being the case at all. With all due respect to you, they are very conscientious and take a lot of time in mitigating safety issues on any decision they make. Everything is thought through and well documented. This is an engineering company and one that is fanatical about quality and they take a long term view towards everything they do.
This is a first year model of an innovative new design. I am sure at some point the shoe will drop and the windshields will be mass replaced if they are indeed as delicate as people are reporting here.
I have had a few rocks hit the windshield and have had no issues yet.
So far, so good for me but it's only been a month. Is the concensus with folks here that it's the quality of the glass that's the issue, rather than angle/placement of the windshield? I was thinking it was the latter using the rational that the general straight up and down angle makes it absorb the impact as a direct hit vs. a windshield with some slope that would immediately redirect some of the force of the impact. thoughts?
My windshield cracked within the first 2000 miles at the carwash. It seems to grow a little every day. I also caught a rock that chipped and spider-cracked on the opposite side. I thought I was just cursed until I found that many other FJ'rs were experiencing the same problem. $1,200 is insane for a windscreen!!!
I have a 1/2 inch diameter ding. No idea of the cause as it happened at night with no other traffic around to throw up rocks. There were some trees around and lots of bugs. They grow hard headed bugs here in Texas I guess....
Got the guys at the carwash to drill and seal the ding, so far hasn't spread any further.
2400 miles on odometer.
Suggestion - if you want to consolidate the info in one place for Toyota's benefit, turn off the other windshield polls and amalgamate the results - admin should be able to do that.
No windshield crack yet. I do have a nice ding in paint on the front of the hood. My wife was just sick that she was the one driving it. "I just wanted you to be driving when it got its first ding."
Small chip about 1/4 inch in diameter with half inch crack going up from the chip on the passenger side. FJ was 3 months old, driving down the freeway heard a sharp thwack I knew instantly what happened amazingly I looked over and saw it while driving. Good news is it hasn't grown at all event after several off road trips.
Dont the insurance companies have anything to say about a 1200 windshield that breaks when you fart with the windows closed? Changing a windshield on a brand new vehicle is a PITA, especially when you've been driving flat windshields for years and never had one break.
Perhaps Toyota needs to remember the past and how they became
number one.
Once upon a time, there were car companies whose business strategists
rallied to the cry of 'planned obsolescence' and who planned on cars that
started developing serious 'wear out' issues around 60,000 miles.
Those companies were number one and two in the world.
As a strategy, profiting from problems you create (rather than solve)
for your customers is bankrupt. Perhaps literally.
I don't doubt, though, that somebody will come up with a more
durable windshield in the after-market, which will cost less than
the OEM one.
Corporate arrogance being what it is, we might have better luck
lobbying the aftermarket suppliers to give us a product that's
so good that people would pull out perfectly good stock ones
in its favor.
Windshield replaced.
Thanks Toyota of Dallas for expediting ( 20 days) one day install.
The guilty kid's dads dropped off 2 checks covering my loss, $1350.00.
Back on the mean streets of Dallas. Now let's see if this one lasts longer... :ninja:
well it happend yesterday 530 am on my way to work heavy wet snow, i pull through the intersection a blob of snow fall off the signal light and smack window looks like the water ballon pic only in front of the driver, glass shards all over the dash luckly i just started to wear perscription glasses 1 week ago,
i have called the 800 # filed a complaint every1 needs to do this. the woman i talked to for 30mins. claims this is the first she has heard of this so i directed her here and she looked at our web site while we talked on the phone. she was ammased! she said more people need to call in. so i say again anyone that thinks the glass in there fjc is defective please call the 800# and file a complaint. oh yeah the dealer said the glass is on back order till dec. 280 on back order 16 intransit from japan that was of yesterday what b.s. i have a brand new truck that i cant use for 6 weeks im pissed!!!
My windshield has two rock chips in it. One is going to start spreading, I can tell. Out of all the other vehicles I have owned before this I have only had one cracked windshield (Ford Ranger) and one small chip (Chevy C10). We are probably talking about 500,000 miles.
My FJ with 11,000 miles already has two chips.
Gee, I am beginning to feel left out with so many cracked FJ windshields. My FJ’s windshield is fine but, I am thinking about taking a ball ping hammer to it, just sooos I can fit in with the FJ broken windshield crowd.:banana_hitit:
