I use 91 Octane and average 20 mpg. However, if I drive steady at 80, the milage drops to 17.5-18 mpg. I recently drove from Hood River, Oregon to Pendleton, Oregon and back again - flat, straight, high speed road. At 85 mph, my average dropped to 15.8 over two fillups. Pushing this heavy, box shaped rig through the air at speed can be costly. But, WTH, it's fun!
I've been using 87 since I got my FJ Nov '06. I've got 34K on it now, and it seems to run fine. I never took the time to check the mpg. Oil change and tire rotation every 5K. I love my FJ! Voodoo Blue, manual, BF Goodrich A/Ts (first flat 12/06, second flat 5/07), no rack (won't fit in garage), love the happy button!
I only run super on mine but just for kicks I ran a full tank of 87 out of it. While I didn't notice a differance in power, I did see a fairly big drop in mpg. I got about 20 to 30 miles less on a tank. Not worth the slightly less cost for the regular unleaded. From now on it'll be super
Getting a good smooth ride and averaging 18MPG in town and 22MPG on trips using 87. I was told that they use premium just to raise there performance ratings for advertisement purposes but that the engine will adjust to regular gas. I'm 72 years young and have had many many cars and trucks. Have never used anything but regular and have never had a problem.
Every time I see this thread it makes me cringe. Disappointing that only 1 in 4 FJ owners run the reccomended 93 octane fuel type.

Re: What grade gas do you run?
I just use 87 octane. With a stock motor and modern computer controlled engines octane should matter little. FWIW, everything I've read on octane says it should not have an effect on mileage.
Welcome to FJCruisers, Buried in the 227 posts in this thread (so far) you will have found that the engine in the FJ cruiser was tuned for max perfomance with 91 octane fuel. With 91 octane it should give you the stated MPG, HP & TQ figures. Yes, it will run prefectly fine & forever on 87 octane, but it will not be producing the same numbers. How much difference.... ? I've never seen data.
Enjoy the forum.

"Disappointing"? Sorry to disappoint you but try as you might, short of showing us all the dyno stats and some Mythbusters grade de-bunkage ... you are unlikely to ever demonstrate a STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT difference in performance and mileage between 87 and 91 (or 93) octane gas. Furthermore, you will be even more disappointed to know that many places in the country DO NOT SELL 93 octane gasoline.
Yeah, we all have our preferences and there are plenty of people hwere who subscribe to the "nothing but the best for my darling baby FJ" but the anecdotal evidence (and perhaps scientific evidence as well) does not show a strong connection between 87 and 91. (Maybe 93 as well)
Its probably more of a placebo effect than anything else. And as a disclaimer, sometimes I run 91, sometimes I run 87. There is no difference that I can perceive and I track my mileage and everything.
Frankly, I wish the rig was tough enough to run on corn silk and isopropyl in the absence of real gas. (For the humor chalenged, that was a joke. I know cornsilk and rubbing alcohol is not a good fuel source for today's high RPM engines)
