I always put premium, no excuses. You are saving what? 4 bucks?
19 gal times 2.79 (87 ot) = 53
19 gal times 3.00 (93 oct)= 57
4 bucks= Peace of mind.
Thats my point of view....but what will happen if you communte a lot and you fill your FJ like 5 times a month? thats like $20 bucks per month.........so its a little of both.....peace of mind paying 20 more bucks a month? or saving those 20 bucks and put cheaper gas into you NEW FJ?
You decide.

True, the cost is usually 10 cents per grade so I agree in that Gallons x (premium - regular) = $4 or $5 per tank.
My concern is when premium is not available, from what I've gathered from the responses, if I have to run regular the engine will adjust. I do agree...the extra few dollars is worth it...now what exact octane we are really getting is probably a scary thought!
If your local gas stations run out of Mid or Premium, is there octane addtives you can use to bring up low octane gas to permium standards?
There are "octane" boosters but my past experience is that they tend to foul plugs! From what everyone says you can run 87 no problem. The change in additive (ethanol <-sp?) is causing a change in process, which requires the tanks to be cleaned prior to adding gasoline back into them. Now there's a supply shortage, it should be resolved within the next several weeks to maybe 1 month and things should be back to normal. Not all areas are seeing a shortage, I've only seen it in certain areas around me one of which is where I work so it's not a major issue, more of a hassle at the moment.
I'm running the regular here in CO which is 85 octane. Haven't heard any knocking or had any trouble. Power seems good. Gas here has ethenol in it up to 10%. Getting 19 - 20 mph. No complaints other than the cost of gas in general.
Haven't recieved my FJ yet, they can't even give me an estimate on time. So, I was wandering around the dealers last week and asked about this question of octane with the Cruiser. The sales guy gave me this update from Toyota. Looks like a grade of 87 or higher is OK.
Scanner won't copy it clearly so I will type it out.

It has been brought to out attention that the label on the FJ Cruiser fuel door states that Premium Unleaded Fuel Only is required.
As the Owner's manual states "select Premium Unleaded gasoline [91 octane or higher] for optimum engine performance" However, Regular Unleaded fuel with a minimum octane rating of 87 is acceptable.
The VOAS guide, brochure and website, show a rating of 239 hp, which was achieved using Premium Unleaded fuel. Please note that this rating may be reduced with the use of non-premium fuel.
I'm almost 100% on my theory. The dealership probably filled my tank with 87 for the fillup. My first tank of gas I was going through at about 16 in my MT. I just filled up for the first time and used 91, the highest you can get in Socal(yes, i know you can get 100 but thats beyond the point). Noticeable difference. Truck pulls harder, feels much smoother, and clutch feels softer too. I may be wrong, but it definitely feels better with the 91. Coming from an rsx-s, this mpg is terrible so far. Oh well.
