I had my FJ for one week . Dealer filled with regular and said it ok to use. Said that Toyota will be revising literature to state 87 is ok to use. May sacrifice a mile per gallon or so
I vote a while back. I ran 87 octane for about 10k miles w/o problems. I read higher octane might give better mileage so I ran 89 octane for a little over 1000 miles. There was some improvement (about 1 mpg) but when I calculated the price of using each grade, I found 87 was slightly cheaper in the long run. I switched back to 87. I haven't recalculated the costs with all the increases. I typically get between 18 to 20 mpg at each tank full.

I bought my FJ back at the end of March. I have 8,000 miles on it now. I have ran 87 octane since it was new. I average 21 mpg. On or off-road it has performed perfect. No lack of power, no pinging no problems at all.
I run 3 tanks of 87 then 1 of 91. I run the 91 for the higher cylinder temperatures to help burn any deposits in the motor from operation. I don't notice any difference in mileage or performance running 87.
