i only filled one tank and went with the 91 out of fear that the thing will sputter like herbie the love bug if i don't. has anyone using the 87 noticed anything negative with that fuel type?
Ive used midgrade 89oc since day one. (1600 miles)
I feel its safe, not the lowest octane, but not as pricey at the premium..
No noticable difference at all, no ping, ect. (computer would adjust for it right away anyways by retarding the timing)
My next tank will confirm it, but I believe I'm getting better mileage with mid-grade (89 oct). In 7 fill ups (including dealer tank), I got my best mileage with my first and last tanks. I know the dealer didn't put premium in and I just dropped down to mid-grade with the latest price hike. All the rest were 91 oct and I had about 1 mpg drop. Spreadsheet posting soon. (Sorry I'm an engineer and live numbers, can't help it.)
I started using 89 getting 15 MPG 5 refills (man). I decided to try 93 on the next fill up. It jumped to 18mpg. Now I also know that it is bound to get better after break in but 3 extra miles is a big enough difference for me!
Topic actual spurs another thought. I'd like to see somebody test the octanes at the gas stations on a regular basis to actually see if to verify the actual differences in the octanes of gas you buy out of the pumps.
I know I'll get flamed and haven't taken the time to collect samples but out on the road I've shot the s*(* with some tankers and whether they are pulling my leg or not I can't say but I've heard several say they've pulled in stations and used the same gas in all the tanks and you can bet they aren't putting the premium in the 87 tanks. With the other things oil, the states and gas stations are pulling now, milking all they can out of us, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
Anyway, I've had a pretty good variety of cars, Vets to Rx-7's, trucks blah, blah blah and never run premium. Only time I've had a knock or sputter is when I've gotten bad gas and not octane I purchased.
To each his own but I'll never run the premium and mine will do just as good as any over the same period of time at about 15 to 20% of the cost.
A friend of mine actually got a station shut down because they were selling regular in their premium pumps. He has a Viper with a built motor and when he filled up he noticed his timing was way back...he called up the consumer department (forget the exact name) and when they tested the pumps..they found regular in the premium slot...several times!
I am curious because I want to know what options I have in case premium is not available or the octane difference varies. From what I am seeing, I will probably run 93 and measure the mileage, if it is low after break-in (initial because we all know 100k miles is really when they break in ;-P ) and go from there.
Very true statement on the timing, Toyota has one smart ECU, it will compensate for knock and retard timing if necessary.
I was putting 89 and my gas pedal would tremble. It's much happier with the 91. Marginally better gas mpg. Those are my debatable findings. Bottom line...I just feel comfortable with 91 (chevron), so that's what I use.
