Re: Airbag, or helmet :)

i just have a couple drinks before i hit the road. that way when im in a crash ill be well lubed and completely obvlious to any pain and suffering. ill also be the one that walks out without a scratch. it works for me.

i didnt get the side fun bags because of my kids. read too many warnings and spoke to a couple of law enforcement guys that gave stern warnings on proper usage. if you have anything extra in the cabin the funbags will fling it at your passengers warp speed - flying projectile in the head. if you are seated out of alignment the funbag will snap your ass in half. so considering those kinds of arguments i decided that having the nice fancy smanshy recaro kids seats (which are tested to extremes that britax and others do not) were better insurance than side airbags. the recaros have nice headrests that protect them from side impacts. us in the front of the cabin will just have to take our chances and drive not stupid like and not play with the ipod while driving.

Re: Airbag, or helmet :)

Here's a question that has been asked, but not satisfactorily answered, so please don't say do a search. Does the air curtain installation prevent the installation of a sunroof?

As follow up to those who favor air curtains

1. How many own another vehicle that is a convertible?
2. How many own motorcycles?
3. How many own a favorite vehicle (classic to you), that they don't intend to sell, but has no air curtains?

I really don't expect an answer to the last three questions, but just wanted to point out what many see as acceptable risk. The FJ is built to better impact standards that those above (possible exception to #3) and the primary reason I am willing to forego the air curtain option.

How many of you would consider trading up in a year or so if Toyota offered a removable top? No air curtain would be available.

While you weren't seriously looking for an answer, I'd like to offer one up anyway because it's an interesting topic.

My dad and I were partial to 56 Ford and Mercury pickups. No air bags, no seat belts, and in some cases no floor boards I'd never consider adding anything to the truck if it was going stock for show -- but if it was a daily driver then seat belts seem pretty reasonable.

My wife's daily driver is a convertible that has side air bags built into the seat. In fact is it has front, side, and knee air bags. I liken the knee air bags to the side bags on the FJ.

I have two motorcycles. I always wear a helmet and require the same of passengers; it was mandatory in Canada and a habit I just maintained when moving to Colorado. The first thing I have to do to enjoy a ride, is finish the ride It's all a question of degree. I accept a significantly greater degree of risk on my motorcycle (daily rider) than in any vehicle with or without side air bags. However I always ride with a helmet and appropriate gear. Without getting into a dangerous political discussion of helmet and seat belt laws; for me it's about calculated risk and a helmet mitigates that risk as do airbags of all kinds. Of course these days Honda is offering an air bag on the gold wing and there's even an motorcycle air bag vest. Given the nature of motorcycle injuries I'm not sure how helpful the vest would be in an accident but the built in one on the gold wing might keep the riders throat from getting cut by the wind screen (point being I'm not sure I'd opt for those features)

We opted for the side curtain air bags on the FJ; however, we did give the dealer the option that if they found a vehicle sooner, without them, we'd take the vehicle sooner! We sat on the fence but consider them cheap insurance for the one time they might be needed and something that won't affect our ability to enjoy the vehicle on or off road.

Sure... that would work But the face shields might be overkill unless we're taking the FJ to Baja. IN which case we'd want breather hoses attached for the silt

I did show up for the FJ test drive on the Sprint -- an on my Tiger when we took the Beemer convertible for it's test drive. In both cases it took a great deal of self control not to strap on the brain bucket when getting settled in before leaving the lot; if for no other reason than to see the look on the dealers face
