Moab trail damage

I just received my monthly newsletter from the Red Rock 4 Wheelers in Moab and they had a couple of members run some trails and found some nasty damage from all of the rain causing rock slides and washouts. Hey Joe Canyon was blocked with numerous rocks, one the size of a house. There were also washouts and the trail was impassable on the dugway to the bottom. Kane Creek also had numerous rock falls and washouts and is now impassable by 4 wheel drive vehicles. They reported that dirt bikes can get through but that it is a real hairy trip. The club is contacting and working with the County and the BLM to see what can be done to reopen the trails to vehicles. They will be running other trails and reporting on the damage in later newsletters. All this is part of the trail checks, marking, and repair that is taking place leading up to the Easter Jeep Safari. If I hear of any more trail reports I'll list them here.

Re: Moab trail damage

I hope they get it all sorted out. I haven't even opened my newsletter yet, too busy playing on the forum I guess.

I bet some of the high trails have snow on them now too.

Re: Moab trail damage

I"m sure the have snow. The house sized boulder sounds like a spring project.

Thanks for the post. I was planning to go to Moab over the Xmas break but I'll wait until spring now.

If some FJ owners would be interested and are willing to drive, (or are close) tit may be a good PR to have FJ members help with the cleanup. I'd be willing to help later this winter if hands and sweat can get some of the stuff clear.

Re: Moab trail damage

Just got my newsletter in the mail and it looks like Hey Joe Canyon has been worked on by the County Road Department and there have been people that have made it through to the end of the trail. It may be open to travel again.
Kane Creek still has problems and they are waiting for San Juan County to find out what can or will be done.

Re: Moab trail damage

all the Needles area backcountry roads inside Canyonlands NP (Elephant, Horse, Lavender, etc) are closed, some probably till spring. the Arches "4wd Road" is closed at Eye of the Whale going north but is open from the Salt Valley Road to Tower Arch.
