I don't know if you've played with this free shareware software yet, but if you have not, you might like what you see. I've been using the software to map out some of my trail runs in San Diego, California located Near Otay Mountain.
It's a very powerful program. If people used it to digitize their trails and then save the trails individually (which is what I have done), we could create a list of trails sorted geographically for people to download and use in their Google Earth program.
Anyway, here is an example of what you can do.

I've got some MapTech discs for a couple of states that have a 3-D setup that is like the google and it's pretty awesome. I'm still learning to use them. They have forest service and BLM and geological survey roads and trails on them.
its free, and its incredibly fun to use. search your house! :P
Keep in mind the free service provided by Google uses dated photos - the one of my house shows undeveloped areas nearby that have been bulit up for over five years now - so the photo is plenty outdated. Not an issue for fun finding your house, but trails change due to conditions such as fires and flooding, and you'll want to double check any you've seen on Google Earth before heading out to wheel them...

I've found that it's kind of hit or miss regarding the dates on the photos. Some are old, but some are more recent. It's a real hodgepodge of photos, so you never know what you're going to get.
But overall, it's a great tool.

I just started looking in Google earth for Hollister Hills. I found it but it's just outside the High Res photos for down town Hollister.
Yup, some of the photos are not high res and some are better. If you look at the first map I did it will show you some of the photos are not as clear. However, when I zoomed in on them to digitize the trail I took, I had no problem finding it. I suspect that the PAY version has all the newest data. It works great for what I've been doing with it and it's free. And, we can all share the data that we create. Check it out if you are into maps and want to easily store all your favorite runs you've done.
