Trail Report/Photo Section/GPS CoordinatesBeen offroad with your FJ? Tell us about it and post up any photos or GPS coordinates so others can possibly follow in your footsteps!
A writeup can be as simple or detailed as you like. I can use what you've posted here + the itenerary you had on TTORA, or you can do something else. Whatever you think.
It looks like the swaybar link broke and the boot was cut...a failing all too familiar for the FJ.
Beside that, the trip looked AWESOME!
Having had that happen to me, this was not the case. We thought the CV might have been the problem cut the boot to diagnose. Not the CV, nothing visibly broken or damaged. Still waiting to here from Stagecoachco about the prognosis.

Well, as much as I'd like to take the time and flesh it out, I just don't have the time, so feel free to copy and paste away! Perhaps once I've settled down in October I'll begin writing my 2006-2007 4WD memoirs...
Ok, so here is the story (at least as far as it goes for now). As you can see from Eric's pictures, we went on a long run near Aspen and Crested Butte Colorado. It was getting late and we were all ready to be off the trail and start home. Finally about 8:30 pm we were on the dirt road that would lead us to pavement. We only had about 4 miles left to go. My passenger and I were chatting, when all of a sudden POW there is a loud bang and a shudder as if we hit a rock. It felt like it came from the right front of the car. I immediatly knew something was wrong and stopped. I got out and nearly pooped my pants when I looked at the wheel. We spent the next hour or two trying to figure out what was wrong (including cutting the CV boot off to see if it was broken). Finally we decided that we needed to get the truck off the trail and to pavement so that I could get it towed. You can't see it in the pics, but the wheel is canted in so much that it is rubbing HARD on the UCA. So hard that we didn't think that I could roll the next few miles without losing the tire. Luckily one of our party had the stock spare on his Taco still (it was 245/75/16 compared to my 255/85/16). Being much smaller, we figured it might clear. Well it didn't clear, but it didn't rub as hard either. Plus the donor said he really didn't care if the tire blew anyway. We figured we should lube the inside sidewall up a bit, and luckily Eric had a can of white lith spray grease. So we drove the last 4 miles of the trail, going between 3-4 mph (according to my scangauge). Finally at about 11:00 we made it to the pavement.
I just got the truck to the mechanic this morning, so I don't have a definitive diagnosis yet. For those of you who want to try a stab at figuring it out here is what I can tell you. There is nothing obviously broken or bent way out of whack. I am starting to doubt that I hit anything as there is no evidence of an impact on my rim. If I did hit something it would have to have hit on the outside of the tire/rim as there were no rocks in the road, just a large rocky roadcut on the right side that jutted out a little. The tire also does not show any signs of impact. From the shudder that we felt, if there was an impact, there really should be a sign. The power steering is also Inop. The tie rod is intact and doesn't seem to be bent.
So does anybody have a guess?
Tony

Well, I am not an auto mechanic by any means, but the ATV's I work on have a very similar front end, just on a smaller scale. Aside from front end components being bent (which you said they aren't), the only thing I have seen that could cause a wheel to lean like that is a wheel bearing out in the hub (or spindle, knuckle, whatever Toyota calls it). That is my guess, probably wrong though.
