This is just crazy to me to think you can just get in your FJC and go... Anyone else? Maybe it's just me...

It's scary to think of what you have and will encounter, but exciting at the same time. I'm envious.

Godspeed
Well, it was in the works for 18 months before we started. The biggest hurdle was getting to know how to work on cars. Both my wife and I come form families who do not tinker with cars - just take them to the mechanic whenever anything comes up.

So for a year and a half before starting we tinkered and tinkered with autos. Now both of us feel fairly comfortable with doing jobs of moderate difficulty, but we are not experts by a long shot.

Being in remote areas without medical care was also an issue, so we spent a month in Wyoming getting our EMT certification. Now when I see an accident I know exactly what to do to stabilize and transport a patient. So does my wife, in case I become the patient!

Lastly we needed to know how to communicate with the inhabitants of the countries we would be visiting. Doing an intensive Spanish course for a month put us on the road to that.

So the act of "just getting in the car and going" became very simple and natural!

Re: Across the Americas in a FJC

Not much is known about the Olmecs, one of the first mesoamerican cultures. Workers for the state owned petroleum company, PEMEX, ran across these amazing artifacts in the village of La Venta, while exploring for oil.

They were moved to Villahermosa for safe keeping. A large portion of the original site was destroyed as a result of the extraction and exploration process. The city of Villahermosa has housed them in a pleasant but slightly Disneyesque park.

Re: Across the Americas in a FJC

Hello All,

Internet connectivity has been spotty as of late. We have just completed out 4th border crossing into Belize. Hopping on a small aircraft we are currently on Caye Caulker in a tiny wooden bungalow. I'm mooching off a neighbor's satellite for connectivity!

Leaving Mexico was bittersweet - we spent so many months there that we almost feel like Mexicans!

Tonight I would like to share a picture of Calakmul, the great Mayan city of the classic period. It took some doing to get out there and a scary 60km one lane road, but isn't that what adventure is about?

Jungle, as far as you can see:
