We spent a LOT of time in the Galapagos and Quito, so now we have to make it up, in order to keep the schedule. Yup that is a dirty word.
I like to do border crossings earlier in the day, to allow for plenty of time. That way a corrupt official doesn't have us over a barrel. We crossed into Peru around 5:30pm and had to rush to get to a safe place before dark. Luckily the officials were very nice and accommodating.
Much to our surprise one of the border police wanted to ride with us, to deliver some important document to the city we were to stay in. I asked him whether he was a "quality" man, and made him give his word that he wasn't going to rob me! He was nice to have along as all police checks went smoothly - just one look in the back and we were waved ahead...
The Peruvian police are not too well paid and have hit us up for "donations" once in a while. But the way they ask is so polite and they put on such a sad puppy face that I can't help but give them a little.
