P.S. What are you using for Internet Accesses in the middle of nowhere? Sat link? Thanks

Mike
It has been quite eye-opening as to how ubiquitous internet access is, even in the middle of nowhere! We were looking at a GlobalStar or BGAN solution when we were planning the trip but it was too expensive. So far it has not hindered us much; we just go off the grid sometimes...

For emergency purposes we have an Iridium Sat phone.

Re: Across the Americas in a FJC

After the Brazilian gas disaster Neena insisted that we still see some of Brazil, so we parked the FJC with friends in Panambi, Brazil while we toured Rio and the adjacent state of Minas Gerais by bus:

So after 25 days it was great to be back on the road again. The honeymoon was short lived - the Argentine province of Entre Rios was unsufferably hot with dull boring scenery. But that was the good part.

In addition to its aforementioned merits Entre Rios boasted corrupt cops that gave us our worse trouble to date. Despite some setbacks Argentina is a very rich and modern country and there is no excuse for corruption here. I would be a little more understanding in a poorer country like Peru or Ecuador where the police are not well paid.

The "infraction" was the D-Shackle in the trailer hitch, which protruded past the bumper. Never mind that I managed to drive almost 30,000 miles through over a dozen countries with this being much of a problem. The fine was to be 330 pesos (about $100) for this violation. It offended my sense of fairness to pay this so I dug in my heels.

I sat with the Commandante in a half constructed structure in the hot sun arguing back and forth, the crux of my argument being that the vehicle was inspected at the border and pronounced safe for use. If I had been in violation it was incumbent on them to inform me at that time. I alternately flattered him about his responsibilities and shamed him about the way he was treating us. After about 45 minutes he was on the verge of tears. We were let go with a warning.

It was a Pyrrhic victory, as the sun aggravated the fever I was running. So now I am laid up in bed Rosario, Argentina.

At least I got CNN

It was a crushing disappointment to turn away from the Amazon jungle just as we were looking into its leafy green border. No malaria pills, high alcohol gas, the FJ throwing DTCs, and expensive or impossible to get spare parts factored into the decision.

For now if I close my eyes hard enough and believe I can imagine this stretch of rainforest in Argentina to be the Amazon...

The picture you have here doesn't look like virgin Amazon Rainforest. One alternative great way to see it might be to take a river trip if you have the time. They aren't too terribly expensive and you definitely get to see rainforest. I took a week-long journey by boat up the Rio Negro from Manaus and it was awesome - I saw Amazon River Dolphins among other cool things.

Most of the forest around either rivers or roadways has been disturbed. Luckily even "virgin" rainforest is not that old, about 200 years or so. The rainforest digests trees and animals at a tremendous rate - everything is renewed, unless the forest is clearcut...

Re: Across the Americas in a FJC

It is starting to get cold again, what a relief! As we head south the story repeats - the poles are opposites yet they are the same. In Chile and Argentina the countryside is more familiar, the roads are better and the facilities are nicer.

Both countries are much like the US, at least when compared to Central America and the poorer countries in South America. The campsites are neat and organized with all kinds of luxuries. In Trafanpulli they have private baths for each campsite, along with lights and electricity for each site. Our neighbors brought microwave ovens and juicers for their week-long stay!

At $47 it was the most expensive campsite I have ever stayed at...

Re: Across the Americas in a FJC

So we were cruising across bleak but beautiful Patagonia when it happened:

There was a big BAM! and Neena saw a smoking mass in the side view mirror. The ferocious ripio of Argentina Ruta 40 had poked a hole in the side wall of the Goodyear MT/R:

What exactly happened? We don't really know. Either a stone penetrated the sidewall or one of the three patches on that tire gave way. Either our tire pressure (32psi) was too low or it was too high. It is hard to find 285/75/R16's out here in Argentina - hope to source one in Chile when we get there. In the meantime it is pretty nerve wracking going without a spare!
