Across the Americas in a FJC

After lengthy preparation we have finally started our trip from San Francisco - Inuvik - Puerto Toro - Buenos Aires. The route spans all three americas in a north to south crossing.

Every journey begins with a small step. In Chico, CA we found a very warm welcome and a historic site:

Leaving Chico we followed the fall colors up to Oregon. This part of the country sure is pretty this time of year:

Entering Canada the weather turned gray and dreary, but we were happy. We are following a dream...

The journey continued North. Snow and ice sometimes covered the road putting us on guard:

On the way to Muncho Lake BC there was much wildlife, like this moose. How do they survive, much less thrive in this cold?

Looking forward to reading your updates. The area around Muncho Lake is one of the most scenic on the Alaskan Highway. Safe journey.

Re: Across the Americas in a FJC

A slightly trick bit loomed in our future. The Dempster Highway in winter. So far we have been the only tourists on this road, but the rewards are many like this sunrise:

There is now no place to clean the FJ, so it will be dirty in all these Northern pictures. On the Dempster we find snow covered hills that look like snow dunes:

White outs are a common occurrence on the Dempster. We got nailed just as we passed the border into the NWT:

I just found the thread with your epic trip!! Wow!

I am currently following your footsteps. The ice crossing over the Mackenzie is not open so the FJ is currently in Fort McPherson.

Currently I am in Inuvik, where I flew to look at the Igloo church. We will fly back tomorrow and resume the long drive.

Re: Across the Americas in a FJC

We were also considering taking the Cassiar back, but the snow might be bad. We need to be back in Wyoming by November 19th and hence might give it a pass. Any opinions?

That's too bad the rivers are not frozen yet. I'm not sure if the Klondike River Lodge is open but there's a carwash near the gas station there. If you're heading over to Dawson City, the 5th Ave B&B is pretty nice. I'd like to do the same drive in the winter one of these days.

If you can, I would highly recommend taking the Cassiar Hwy back. I saw a lot of construction this summer to repair the highway. It's narrow in some sections but very beautiful and all but about 60 miles are paved now. Don't miss the totem poles at the end of the Cassiar.
