Pleasant and South Park Canyons - Death Valley - California

This is a nice loop in the Panamint Mountains in Death Valley National Park - but actually done from the Panamint Valley.

The loop starts out near Ballarat. The obligatory google map is here.

A nicer map of the area with trails is here. The Pleasant/South Park loop is near the bottom of the map:

This loop has a bit of everything. Desert running, boulder scrambling, drives along stream beds, old mines, wide open valleys with wild burros, pine forests, expansive views of butte valley and panamint valley, steep sided canyons, the works.

The trail up Pleasant Canyon starts in Ballarat Ghost Town in the southern and eastern part of Panamint Valley. Very much dry desert. Here's some of the local flora:

Some short distance up the trail, the trail merges with the stream that carved the canyon. This is no place for paint scratch wusses :

Along the way, you'll see remnants of mines and of vehicles that plied the trail in busier days:

Hopefully my vehicle was not to join them:

In the winter, the upper parts of Pleasant Canyon see snow:

Right at the top, you enter pine forests:

Head 'em off at the pass:

The view into Butte Valley:

At the top of South Park Canyon, the terrain opens up into wide and flat plains:

Wildlife includes burros:

South Park then narrows again on the way down:

More brush to worry the paint:

I'm anxiously waiting your trail photos. I hope to make a similar run in 2008.

As always, I know your FJ pulled its way through.

...continued from post #1

But that's no where near as worrying as the sheet ice that can develop on this trail in winter (I slid like 15' on this stuff before coming to a stop wedged in between the canyon wall and the trees):

One of the more fun features of South Park is a steep switch back sequence that involves a wooden bridge:

Near the bottom of the switch backs are cabins that you can use for the night:

The exit from South Park is stunning:

And finally a little high speed desert running from Ballarat back to the highway:

Awesome pics Mark. Those bushes are evil! Where did you find out about this trail? Amazing scenery.

I first came across it in Massey and Wilson's Backcountry Adventures SoCal book.

Thanks Mark. Looks like you put the AT back on. Noticed the mileage saving?

Mark that is a dream trip and I am very sorry not to have followed your dust. Also an excellent report and photos.

I am wondering if there is not a rivalry developing between you and certain others on this thread for FJ Explorer par Excellence.

However I am surprised at the indiscretion showed in this picture. I had expected more privacy from an Englishman:

There's just something about the scenery that makes you want to completely relax... everything

The AT's went back on because I figured I wouldn't do much rock crawling on this trip - I like the AT's better for general higher speed running. The bummer was that, no, the mpg was no better. It's railed at like 11mpg. (The Pitbulls were more like 9, but still, 11mpg sucks, not sure what else I've screwed up).
