I'm heading to the lower Maze this year (Sept) planning to camp at Teapot, The Wall, The Dollhouse, and Flint Seep campgrounds. I was inhe upper Maze last year (Panorama Point, Cleopatra's Chair and High Spur), the roads were not that bad (I'd rate 'em at 2-2.5), but I've heard that the Teapot Canyon area of the trails is pretty harry. I've looked for a trail rating to no avail, and was wondering if any members have been out in that area and could give me a heads-up. Any info would be welcome! I believe I'll be heading to Teapot camp on the first Monday after Labor Day-If I can land the permit that is-if anyone wants to team-up for the trip let me know. Thanks to all who reply, Tim

Re: Teapot Canyon
Man, I would LOVE to go on that trip - Canyonlands is the best N.P. ever and The Maze is my favorite part. I'm going to put this on my calendar, but no way of knowing this far out if I can actually go or not.
It's been many years since I have been where you are going. At that time, I was in an F-250 with open diffs and had no problems at all but I'm sure that conditions change over time.
Please keep posting your plans and etc. between now and then.
Timbo, you have piqued my interest but I really cannot plan quite this far out due to so much of my work being for schools (my peak work months seem to be June through September). A Hoosier mini-caravan would be cool though.

I'll keep you posted as time goes by, I'd really like to have someone to go, as two trucks (like heads) are better than one. It is apparent by your pic that you have been there, so how is the Teapot Canyon section? I know the F-250 made it, but was there any winching done? I'm going w/o a winch, but packing my Hi-lift and recovery gear. What year were you there last? Last year the section from Hans Flat road down to Teapot was closed due to a washout. I'm hoping they have it fixed this year!

Yeah, that would be excellent! I'll post updates as to departure times and route. Will likely head back thru Ouray on the way back as I did last year. Would welcome anyone who wants to go! Tim

It was rough and slow, lots of small ledges, but no winching (the F-250 didn't have one).

The good news is, I have a winch on my FJC. The bad news is, the last time I was there was 1980 or '81, so my knowledge/memory is horribly out-of-date.

I'm sure if you want a crowd, you can post up and get plenty of folks to come along.
Like I said, I am serious about it if I can arrange my workload around it.
Yep, a permit is needed, obtainable in advance on the net at canyonlands np. Here's the agenda: 9/7 doing Fins-n-Things and/or Hells Revenge, 9/8 at Teapot camp via Hans Flat Ranger Station, 9/9,10 at The Wall camp, 9/11,12 at The Dollhouse C camp, 9/13 at Sunset Pass camp, 9/14 R&R in Moab via Flint Trail to Hite, 9/15,16 Peekaboo camp in the Needles-Elephant Road is a must do type of thing, 9/17,18 in Monticello playing golf at The Hideout-A very nice and challenging coarse.
