Re: San Bernardino Exploration

That's beatiful! The last time I was in that vicinity (okay, a bit more to the north), I was driving around in my second-favorite SUV, an M-1 tank at Ft. Irwin. I would love to run around in my FJ where you are.

Re: San Bernardino Exploration

Looks like a great time. I have done that trip before and remember coming across some kind of nicely carved wooden heads on the side of the trail, did yo see anything like that?

I don't remember seeing anything like that. There are A LOT of different trails and off-shoots around there.

We did see a pack of dogs, some graffiti made to look like petroglyph's, the odd/weird trees that Tony took a picture of, the odd but cool rock formations, the lower jaw of a deer (we think), and a monkey in a tree (aka, Alex) .

It started on what was labeled as Power Line Road, which was basically an access road for maintenance of the big power line tower's. It came to Coxey Truck Trail, which we took, and then ended up on some of the numbered roads. Tried to do White Mountain road, but I think that's where we hit the first trouble. Hit the Horse Spring campground for lunch, and then tried to go out directly to Fawnskin. That's when we hit a slight panic mode, because the direct and known route was closed. We had a choice of a known extra difficult trail (as sun was just setting) or an unknown road, or go back (known 2+ hour drive). We took the unknown, and the GPS I have got us out. I told it to get us home, and it told us where the left and right turns were.

Tony may have more details. I think the numbered trail was 3N16 or something like that.

Re: San Bernardino Exploration

About the monkey in the tree...

The way out was via 3N16. Basically it was Powerline Road-Coxy-4N16-3N17 (White Mountain Road)-4N16-and 3N16 again. Not sure of the route that lead from 3N16 to the lake.

Dave, I love this one!
