Wow. Scary story. Guess that's why you gotta pack heat in the AZ wilds.

Re: Bloody Basin Road

They said the whole family is being treated for rabies and request anyone else who may have come in contact with the cougar to get treated as well.

Generally the cougars stay far away from people but this one was in the later stages of rabies so it was pretty much out of it.

Nice pictures Don. Sorry to hear about the incident, but looking at this picture, it looked like the rock had revenge on it's mind!

Re: Bloody Basin Road

Don-

The trail report and photos in your folder of the area are precisely why I love Arizona trails so much.

The situation with the cougar underscores why one must be prepared. Between the metaphorically rabid humans and the actually rabid cougars/coyotes/wild animals, one must be ready to protect those we love. I won't rant on the need for the right to keep and bear arms. There have been a lot of threads on that from the family in Utah whose son was taken and killed by a bear to the other similar incidents. However to remain unprepared in the face of so much to the contrary is absurd to me. Yes we have police and park rangers whose job it is to respond and to pick up the pieces after the fact. What an indictment of ourselves if the pieces they pick up are pieces of our children because we were too weak to protect them with the means available.

I'm sorry about the trouble with the FJ. It ended well from what you told us, but I can fully identify with the stress of dealing with it -- until 3 am.

Re: Bloody Basin Road

Larry
Thanks for the "feeling the pain" response to my FJ misfortune. I am picking up all the parts from Toyota this morning. I hope when I get it all in , the alignment will be the last piece. I can only hope there isnt anything else wrong.
The situation with the animal is an eye opener. I don't beleive the cat would have stopped at a child, given the advanced stage of rabies it was in.. You are correct, I will be adding trail gear that makes big noise to my FJ
thanks
Don
