Question Moab Rim Trail

I'm heading to Moab in sept for some 4 wheelin, and was wondering if anyone has tried the moab rim trail, and if they think a stock FJ will handle it. If not, what trails would you recomend for a stock FJ? Next year I plan on having a lift and other mods done, but for now it's stock all the way. Any info would be great. I've looked some sites up on line, but one mans idea of a 4+ trail may not be the same as mine. Clearance and being winchless is my main concern. Thanks everybody and ROCK ON my fellow FJers.

a quote from my moab trail guide:

"Difficult, This trail wastes litle time getting down to business. The first mile scares the wits out of most people. I've driven it many times and still get nervous. A long climb of tight, tippy, and extremely difficult ledges requires excellent driving skills and a very capable vehicle. Rollovers are not unusual. you must come down the same way you go up. Stock vehicles and inexperienced drivers should stay off this trail. Lockers are highly recommended. Do not drive this trail alone."

...take from it what you will...I'm a fairly experienced driver, and his other trail descriptions seemed pretty spot on... Our group took the trail across the highway from it... Poison Spyder Mesa - Gold Bar Rim - Golden Spike... those trails seemed not so bad, just LONG...we were at it for 12 hours... I could see Moab Rim from the Mesa...and it looked scary!

I love Moab!!

I'm not able to come up with suggestions at this moment...most of the trails the group went on were difficult level trails... some I could see an FJ doing O.K. on... Moab Rim... I'd say no...

Good Luck! Hope you don't have a fear of heights!!

Re: Moab Rim Trail

Thanks for the post, sounds like fun-next year, post mods. I think I'll try one of the other routes unless some one who's done the trail thinks it's do-able with a stock FJ. Has anyone got any suggestions for which trail I should do?
Thanks and ROCK ON FJ fanatics!

Has anyone done the White Rim Trail? It was featured in one of the Toyota magazines in the spring and is a great mountain bike epic ride. It should also be good for cruising in some incredible canyons.

Re: Moab Rim Trail

Timbo2, I have done Moab Rim 3 times in a heavily modded FJ40. I would not even think of doing it in a stock FJC. Serious roll-over risk in the first 1/10 mile. Never without an experienced spotter.....

I will absolutely reiterate this, don't even try it alone. If you really want to try it, hire a local guide to take you up, and to spot you.

Dan Mick (local Moab adventure guide) is very good, and might be willing to take you up in a stock rig, you can look him up on the internet.

I wouldn't do it with my stock FJ. I've driven it a dozen or so times in my modded TJ and it was always a butt puckerer. I am doing in my newly modded FJ in October. Anyone else joining me?

Easy trail, spectacular drops and views. One of my most highly recomended outings. I've done it in 12 hours on a bike and 9 in my TJ going slow. It would be even nicer in the longer wheelbased FJ. Go for it, enjoy, and post lots of great pics!

Re: Moab Rim Trail

Thanks to everyone for your input. Esp. MICRAD, BIGBADFJ, and MOABRAT. I talked to some rangers who recomended Poison Spider Mesa trail as good-to-go for a stock FJC, any arguments or do you disagree?
