absolutely awesome report. We were going to try to make it out at the end of oct into nov... but didn't get to plan it . We'll be there soon enough!
I wish I had more vacation time so I could get back down there again sometime soon.

Wow, I never knew Moab was so beautiful! Gotta put it on my places to go.
I would highly recommend you guys doing so...the whole Southern Utah area is tremendous...and the pictures just give you a taste on what it looks like in person.
Did you also start from the north and go south on Lockhart or did you just do Lockhart Canyon??...if so then you know how nasty the beginning of the trail can be.
The beginning is pretty hairy (for me). I think it is easier to go North to South and then take the highway back to town. I love the remoteness of the Lockhart Basin trail.
I'm trying to talk the better half into a trip to Moab this winter. We went last February and had the whole place to ourselves plus the hotels are cheaper. Easter Jeep Safari and Memorial Day were way to crowded last year.

Yeah finding those dino prints were great...it is amazing to see evidence of something that lived there years ago and wonder what it was like.
This is an honest question(not being a smartass) Are there dino tracks/skeletons/evidence anywhere back East where you live? Just curious.

This is the second year in a row we did this trail and it has become one of my favorites(aside from the breakdown). Yes, the begining is the nastiest part....but once you get past that initial kick you in the ass section it is amazing and like you said remoteness(other than Chester's Trailer).
Winter rates in Moab are sweet.....EJS and Memorial day are not!

Not Rover but I can answer this question -
The dinosaurs reached their zenith in the Jurassic Period 180 - 140 million years ago and to a somewhat lesser extent in the Cretaceous (140 - 70 million years ago). So to even potentially have fossil dinosaurs, you must first have Jurassic or Cretaceous-age sedimentary rocks exposed at the surface where they can be studied and excavated. Much of the western interior U.S. is covered with Jurassic or Cretaceous sedimentary rocks at the surface, but in the eastern U.S. there are either not as many preserved or exposed at the surface, or the Jurassic rocks there are not sedimentary and hence do not contain preserved fossils. There are lots of fossils older than the dinosaurs back east, but the vast preponderance of dinosaur fossils in the U.S. are in the west.
