If it's in early December, let me know when you come out Larry.....there are some SICK trails I can show ya.
Sean
If the trip is December 15 to 16, I can come out a day early or something depending on your schedule. As soon as I get a confirmation that I am "reserved", I'll make sure that my work schedule doesn't interfere with play.

Cool. My schedule is usually pretty easy to get a day off if the 14th isn't an off Friday for me.
What do you wanna run? Something you can challenge the FJ on, something scenic or something medium level difficulty? I'm not sure by that point I'll be willing to run something really difficult, especially if I can't get a few of my retired buddies to go along. If we can get some of those guys to go....I *might* be up for something harder.

I just need to keep the FJ intact enough to make the Copper Creek Trek. If it has to be hauled back to California after that on a flat bed, so be it. Really anything would be fun. I haven't wheeled in Southern AZ since I was a kid attending Edison Elementary and we had an old International Scout (no, you weren't born then). It's your sandbox. You can call the tune -- but if you expect me to keep up with your buggy in the rocks, you'll be disappointed.

Interestingly... the way I ended up in Arizona was that I got sold on the training program I went to, here... by a Dr. Elena Sibley. I wonder if there's any relation to the Roy Sibley mentioned above.

So I take it that means you wanna drive the FJ, right?
What do you think Jon? Any suggestions? I'm thinking of taking him on Martinez Canyon (it's usually the one I take people on that are new to the state). I'll bring my pick incase the luge bypass is as washed out as it has been in the past.
Neither. Actually...you can sorta make out the wash at the bottom (gray looking gravel area). You actually go up some narrow (somewhat steep) and some very off camber (and often washed out) switchbacks to get to the point where this pic is from. You still have a LOT of climbing to do to reach a saddle to make it over the top....then you drop down before heading up to a really high point from which you can see Phoenix 40+ miles away. Then you have to go down the Luge or the bypass to it. Depending on the year, it can be easy or body damage likely. It hasn't been difficult in years, but last year there was certain body damage unless you leveled out the slide down the bypass with a pick or shovel or you were running full widths.
***EDIT*** There's also a mine that goes through the mountain (after you go up 3 levels and swing across a chasm!). It's cool to go through if you are making good time on the trip. Kinda neat to see 1880's technology. There's also a rockcrushing mill towards the beginning of the trail with all kinds of generators and heavy equipment for the 40's still there. It's too heavy for jackholes to steal it.
Most of this stuff is optional though. Your FJC can make it, but there will be a point where we have to turn around. Scenery is similar to Martinez but you don't get the views from the top of the mountain.
So do we climb the slope to the right or the left?
The trail crawls the creekbed for several miles before it ascends out of the canyon bottom on some SPORTY switchbacks which are eroding FAST. It then loops back and drops back into the canyon bottom near the beginning of the crawl.
Don and I were talking about going up there soon. It's a great choice. It's one of the prettiest canyons I know. It's a perfect place to put a sporty trail.
Interestingly, since I crunched my FJ and it's getting fixed... The body panel that I creased on the slide will be nice and fresh, ready to crease again.
Oh... I just tried to Google Earth "Copper Creek, AZ" and it puts down right off of a "Copper Creek Rd." in a disappointingly low resolution area west of Safford. The roads in and out are clearly 4WD accessible only.
After googling "copper creek", I've found several people's pictures of driving the trails around there and it looks like some legitimate degenerated trail. I'm excited. The couple of web sites that mention something about going out there also mention that the trail is closed to the public, now.
