The registration fee caught me by surprise. I thought this was public land. I don't mind helping out but didn't want to do it in a way that was mandatory. As much as I'm for the offroad community, I'm not going to spend $60+gas for a 1 day trip to a crowded area that I've never been. I know it's for a good cause, but please let me come to terms with it on my own. I'm sure there are other clubs out there that would love my money and they are all for good causes too. Money doesn't grow on trees you know!
I'm not here to tell you what you should or shouldn't do, but every year when I hear people whine about the registration fee, I have to educate them. Because clearly, it seems like most people never take the time to read the TDS website, look at past year(s) TDS events, etc.....
And it's a three (3) day event, Feb. 29th, through march 2nd. And, it's unlike anything you've ever seen or attended before!! But, unfortunately (for the people who complain) they never get to experience it firsthand, and most (not saying you in particular) are too short sighted.
Also, TDS isn't in it to make money, sorry you feel that way.
And wtf, you don't have a money tree in California??? We have them everywhere here in Las Vegas!!!
Oh, if you do decide to pony up and make it, I'll buy you a couple of beers (or a rum and coke), we'll there's not a bar there, but I'll take some out of my fridge for you.....that should lessen the blow!!

It doesn't? Uh oh.
Fjamming, this is an enormous event and with the thousands of people lining up to go on trail rides, it's definitely a good idea to sign on with the All-Pro folks if you do decide to go.
I do have to say X2 on that raffle. It was the biggest I'd ever seen! Buy extra tickets if you can!
M
The only way you can buy extra raffle tickets, is to pay for another registration!!! Not even TDS staff can buy more than their one (1) ticket that they get with their paid registration!!
Look for my034runner (black with lots of scratches!!), I'll be there somewhere!!

I'm not in any way implying that TDS is trying to make money off this. I appreciate their effort, but it's not just the registration fee that's preventing me from going. Having my trip limited to just one day is also another big factor. In reality, I would much rather explore the area with a few close friends with no time limits. If I can go for 3 days and not feel guilty doing it, I'd be all over it. Those that can go, please take lots of pics!

Fjamming, not to side w/ anyone, they do put on a great event and if your only allowed to go to Ocatillo Wells for one day, your right the fee would be high, for three days and the raffle it's a bargain. A limited trail run would be a great experience! 4000 people on a run is like Glamis on Thanksgiving!
prior to the FJ I was a vintage Bronco driver so I don't know if I could stomach all those AMC Jeeps(would have to wash the FJ in tomato juice after the trip!). There are some great 1 day trips in ABSP and at Ocatillo ORVA

Dude, it's a three (3) day event, with the main TDS and All Pro trail runs on Saturday. Come out Friday, and we'll go out and explore on Friday. I'm thinking of going down Thursday after work, so if I can do that, then I'll be ready for some wheeling all day Friday!!
Also, don't discount the all night wheeling that goes on!!! I had a lot of fun last year night wheeling.....Good Times!!!
Got some new lights to try out also!!!
Look, not trying to twist your arm, but think about it, if you want to meet up, PM me, and we'll exchange cell #'s. I already have my camp spot picked out, and am making a bee line right to it. You're more than welcome to camp out with us too.
That goes for whoever else is going.

It's always fun @ TDS to show some of the Jeeps that they're not the only ones that can wheel.
My favorite was two or three years ago, after strapping a Jeep up a hill it couldn't make (and every Toyota walked up!!) took another harder hill.
Got up to the top of the mesa, and all of these old school Jeep guys were up there watching me go up, old dude comes up to my034runner and asks me, how the hell did you get up that hill.....I looked at him, and said, I drove up, how the hell did you make it up??!!!!!!!
That was a cool TDS memory too!!!! Lots of them, you need only to show up and participate!!!!

X2 on the TDS. This will be my third TDS, the first in 15 years though. Every dime spent at this "runs" goes to keep the OHV areas open for the rest of you/us that can't seem to come up with the $$$.
I try to attend all the local CA4WD events each year, yae there are alot of vehicles, but you do not have to participate in the organized runs, go off and explore if you feel the need. But if you have never experinced the TDS raffle, brace yourself and get a spot early.
I to enjoy going on 1-3 vehicle runs, but If we don't help support our sport it will go away, just ask any old timer about the Oricopia Mountains, or the old Fast Camel run held there. Dustpark and myself along with others will be out on Friday morning camping with ALL-PRO. See ya there, lets get a run in before dark on Friday.

Here is a copy of a post my friend Dan (MontanaDan) posted up on another forum. Just to show everyone the relevance of this event:
Time is running short! Three more days and we are on our way to the TDS Desert Safari. This will be my 12th year in a row that I have made this event. This event is the Woodstock of Four Wheeling. This is a family event and Tierra Del Sol will donate every dime collected on this run to help California Associations fight their road and trail closures. This club only allows 50 active members and the club officers will not even let these members celebrate their hard work for the event with a special dinner. We all need to support these California Groups (TDS, California Association of 4WD Clubs, Blue Ribbon Coalition, etc.). If the environmentalists have their way, California trails will be closed and our Nevada trails will be next. Come on guys, they need our help and support.
There will be a big staging area set up there and you will find vendors like the BF Goodrich Semi Truck (they will fix your flats for free), Currie and many other four wheel drive companies. Your registration will get you one ticket for the Saturday evening drawing, $70K plus worth of four wheel drive stuff to be given away (Warren Winches, Tires, Wheels, Seats, Fire Tubbies, Straps, Lockers and on and on. I know the time is short but we would like to see your support. Robert Anderson (my034runner) has done a good job recruiting for this run and can help with any questions. Please feel free to call my cell at (702) 203-8323 if I can answer any questions. Hope to see you in the convoy to this event. I'm looking forward to seeing my old Safari friends again, we only see some of these guys once a year. This is a great opportunity to meet some new friends that will become future friends.

Originally I was thinking since I would be in the area sunday that I would drop in on the event but it looks tooooo huge to just drop by...
I think I will stick with just camping in Anza Borrego and running other trails.
Wow I will say this is going on the calender for next year!
