Pre-Summit Adventure through NE AZ July 12-15th, 2008

Josh and I are thinking about a taking the Monday off before Summit and foregoing the caravan on the 15th, instead leaving on a little adventure up to CO starting July 12th (Saturday). I'm posting this up to see if any other people would be interested in joining us. All are welcome of course, even for part of the trip if you aren't going to summit, but I know a couple of folks mentioned leaving early to spend time in various places.

There are lots of places on the way that neither of us have ever been to and we thought that taking the time to check them out going, rather than rush (or skip) on the way back to Phoenix would be more fun. We thought about doing Canyonlands and Moab, but that would be a week trip in itself so we are saving that one for later. Right now the tentative schedule/stops would be:

July 12th Phoenix to Meteor Crater to Petrified Forest....KOA or hotel in Holbrook, unless we can make it to Chinle to camp
July 13th to Chinle/Canyon de Chelly National Park for hiking or off-roading through canyon, then up to Four Corners and on to Cortez, CO for camp or hotel.
July 14th Visit Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, then 12 miles to Mesa Verde National Park for hiking and guided tours...on to Durango for camp or hotel.
July 15th Hang around Durango until we get sick of the beauty, then head up to Ouray to start FJ Summit 2008!

Big hole in the ground where they shot the 1969 moon landing:

Giant fossilized trees and the Painted Desert:

Canyon de Chelly:

Finally your opportunity to be in 4 places at once:

Canyons of the Ancients:

Mesa Verde:

Of course this is just a loose schedule, some things may get dropped from the plans or changed due to time/interest. We are open to ideas that anyone else may have who is interested in venturing with us!

Re: Pre-Summit Adventure through NE AZ July 12-15th, 2008

So this trip is still in the planning stage, but here is what my thoughts are so far. In order to have enough time in Canyon de Chelly, I'm thinking we should leave Friday night and at least get up to Flagstaff. That will take a couple of hours off our trip Saturday and more time to enjoy the things we want to see. Then it will be most of the day Sunday in Canyon de Chelly, the up to Cortez via the 4 Corners. All day Monday at Canyons of the Ancients and Mesa Verde, then over to Durango to spend Tuesday waiting for the rest of the caravan to catch up, then on up to Ouray.

Right now I'm thinking KOA in Flag and Cortez, and maybe even Durango, and we should be able to make a res to camp in Canyon de Chelly.

If anyone knows of any little hidden treasures we should work into our plans please let me know.

Again, anyone with the extra time is welcome to join us for all or part of the trip, even if you aren't going to Ouray. KOA's are running about $25 a night for tents, as I'm trying to keep this as much on the cheap as possible.
