Visiting Vegas. Any recommended trails?

I am going to try and rent an FJ somewhere. If not I will spend some coin and rent a Hummer H1 for the day. Any suggestions on where to go for an offroad daytrip away from the tourist crowds?

Is it legal to take off onto BLM trails?
TIA

There are quite a few good trails in Vegas from senic to difficult. Check out this link on the Vegas forums for trail reports: http://702fjcrew.net/FJForums/viewfo...ef769d6f5c7288

One easy one would be Bitter Springs. There are a few rocky washes but other than that it could be mostly done in 2wd. It is close to Valley of Fire SP so you can make a day trip out of it.

BLM trails are fine, just make sure they are designated for use. There are a lot of tracks out there that are illegal to follow and may not even be blocked or signed "no vehicles".

If you really want to see some rural Nevada, try Wheeler Pass or Rocky Gap in the Spring Mountains, Old Alamo Road or Gass Peak Trail in the Desert National Wildlife refuge, or hit some trails in the Lake Mead National Recreation area near the Anniversary Narrows and Bowl of Fire.

All of these trailheads are an hour or less from Las Vegas and give you a lot of variety and optional additional trails. You'd probably be getting a lot more responses, but there's a big FJ gathering on the Old Mojave Trail between Laughlin, Nevada and Baker, California. Another good one if you have two-three days and camping equip.

tip----bring at least 5 gallons of water, a spare-spare if possible and a compressor for airing your tires back up after deflating.

Kodachrome, Rainbow Gardens and Lava Butte are practically right in Vegas. All can be accessed from the west side of the Wetlands Park near Sam Boyd Stadium. All are legal trails. Stock friendly, with a surprisingly remote feel to all of them for being so close to town. Try Findley or Fletcher Jones Toyota for the rental, I know they both rent other Toyota models at very reasonable rates. probably FJs too.

If you will be in a rental like you mentioned, these would be good trails. Rocky Gap and Wheelers Pass that SandRat mentioned are great trails but I wouldn't take a rental on them.
