Ouray Colorado Trip

I was looking into planning a trip to Ouray (the Switzerland of America) to do a little wheeling. I have heard there are 350 miles or so of trails there and this is where they have the Jeep Jamboree each year. Maybe the forum members from CO can comment on whether this a good spot for off roading and relaxation?

Maybe plan an event for the Forum members here, it's pretty far for everyone, but it looks worth it.

Re: Ouray Colorado Trip

My family and I plan on going to Ouray again this year. We just have not set a date yet. Lots of snow still there (see gearguys potos).FJ in Colorado high country About the end of July is a good time to go. The trails are easy other than some tight spots that make it hard to pass and VERY steep drop off on one side of trails in areas. Great views, cool old western style towns(Silverton,Telluride, and Ouray), and ghost towns high up on the trails to see. A must do vacation. We camped at the Ouray KOA last year. This would be a good place to stay at. It is close to the trails and a large camp ground.
EDIT:
PIC #1-Telluride PIC#2-The start of Imogene Pass from Telluride, this part of the trail gets very narrow and just drops off on one side. A person rolled off the mtn. here because he pulled over to far to let another person pass. PIC #3-old mine shaft PIC #4-Animas Forks ghost town PIC #5-Looking down at California Gulch trail to the left and Mineral Creek trail heading back to Ouray on the left.

My wife, daughter and I are going to be there, arriving sometime around 16-20th July. (not firmed up yet), planning on doing "alpine loop" area, between Ouray, Lake City, and Silverton. I am from Dallas area also. Let me know if you want to compare notes.

Re: Ouray Colorado Trip

We are planning a trip there this year too. Starting in Farmington, NM then three days in Moab and then two days in Ouray. The hotsprings there are a must. Then there is Imagene Pass that takes you from Ouray to Telluride that we are going to hit. The only thing we are not sure about is the snow since we are planning the trip in early October, the pass might not be "passable" at that time. Keep us up to date on your trip and how it goes, I would like to hear all about it.

Re: Ouray Colorado Trip

Awesome, thank you all for the feedback, it sounds like everyone agrees it is a good spot. Let me talk to the boss (the wife), check out the calendar, and set a date. I will post here shortly and we can firm up a date, time, and meeting place in Ouray.

Thanks Again to All,

Graham

Re: Ouray Colorado Trip

Well brother, I'm going to be in Telluride the end of July for a week, and its just a relatively short 4 wheel excursion over Imogene Pass from Ouray. As I recall, you're going to be an expectant father around that time (my recollection could be off some though). I'd love to drive over and do the Lake City - Silverton loop with some compatriots if anybody's going to be there; and there's always the pucker-up drop down Black Bear going back to Telluride from Ouray.
