Re: Eglin Reservation May31-Jun01! This time it won't be FREEZING!

I thought you guys might get a kick out of these pictures I found on another site from a ride I was on a couple of weeks before our big shindig.

Remember me telling you about a guy from the local Land Rover club that took the WRONG line through Matt's Crossing and ended up trashing his LR?

Well, here it is. This is about 2 seconds before all HECK broke loose and I scrambled to get him out with trusty Bessie.
I just remember thinking to myself, "Gee, THAT's a ballsy line-".

And this is the Defender that takes my award for most insane leg lifting on the same washout you guys are talking about right now.

YIKES!

It's just you. Same height, but he went STRAIGHT across into that big hole all of US went around. Get's a wee bit deepish in the center, doesn't it?

I wonder how fast he was able to slam in the clutch and jam her in reverse and spin like a mad man to go back to where he just was sitting before the OH **** factor woke him up? LMMFAO

Sucks for him but did he not look before he leaped. Just my first time looking at it I could tell the center was deeper and that was not the right line.

Hey Matt how much water did he take?

Funny thing is, he DID look before he leapt. I took all the LR guys down to the water's edge, just like on our run, and physically showed them what needed to happen.

People may think I'm being silly when we get each rig set up with a recovery strap BEFORE they cross, but we learned that lesson with this guy's LR.

The day this happened I was in the same spot on the far side with the strap hooked up to MY truck. When I saw him bog down and went flying to the FJ and backed it up but it took nearly a minute for the guys to get the shackle hooked up because the recovery point was two feet under murky water. They were sitting in water by the time I was able to start my pull.

It didn't help that he kept the gas on in a vain attempt to discover oil. I was amazed that lil ol Bessie even got that thing out with as deep as he had buried himself and as much added water weight had been added.

Water was even with the seats in front and maybe halfway up the tail gate at the worst of it. I'd say the interior had a hundred gallons or maybe less. You would NOT want to be standing there when the doors opened.

I believe he was in need of a new stereo and speakers all around, and a new tranny. Ouch.

He said afterward that he had watched me cross and that it looked simple... It IS if you do the crossing right.

The last time I went straight across Matt's Crossing was back in November. I nearly had a heart attack trying to show boat for the camera. NEVER AGAIN
