We are trying to see if there is interest for a day run to either GWNF or Crabtree this Saturday Dec 6th. I am up for a run and fire931 sounds like he is. Anyone else? Have a preference GWNF or Crabtree or something else in the area?
I will be doing a run at GWNF on Sat 12/13 with a eclectic group of rigs (2 Troopers, 2 Jeeps, a full size Dodge Ram and a FJC). We plan to meet at the Shell station on Rt 33 around 9:30 AM, set up camp in the meadow around 10 AM and hopefully be on the trails by 10:30 or so. If your 12/06 trip falls through consider joining us.

Sounds good. Looks like I am not getting many takers so I may join you.

Cool. This will be the first time at GW for most of the drivers so another experienced hand will be helpful especially if it snows.
Regardless of the weather, we plan to spend the night in the meadow. I have told everyone to bring wood. Most of us will be freezing in our tents but another Mike is bringing his Starcraft with its propane heater. Such luxury.

What trails you planning? I have a couple of friends here that would like to join in on a run but they have stock jeeps. How deep woul the drive river be with the weather we have been having. How deep can a heep ford? :-)

This is planned as a stocker friendly trip. We plan to basically run the same trails that the MATCs run for their Fall Colors event, with the exception of the ledges at Dictum Ridge. After we set up camp in the meadow, we plan to:
Run to the top of Flagpole Knob and down the back side, basically a fire road with some mud holes and obstacles.
On the way back to the meadow, we plan to hit Dry River. But we'll try to stay out of the deeper stuff as no one want to get wet in the cold.
Depending upon how it goes, the next day we might try the Second Mountain/Dictum Ridge loop. Since it is hunting season, the gate at Second Mountain should be open. My major concern is possible damage to the rocker panels on some of the stock rigs going down the Dictum Ridge bypass and over the berms at the bottom. So we may have to back-track some like we did on a trip with the Bruisers a couple of years back.

The plan is for the campers to meet at the Shell Station on Rt33 on the West side of Harrisonburg around 9:30. (This is the last place to get gas so be sure to top off.) Here are the detailed directions from I81 to the Shell Station:
Take I81 EXIT 247B E.MARKET ST/US-33 West toward HARRISONBURG (There are several Harrisonburg exits. Be use to take the correct one!)
In about 2 miles you will reach the city center and have to go counter clockwise around the square.
Turn RIGHT onto N MAIN ST/US-11 N/US-33 W.
Turn LEFT onto COURT SQ/US-33 W.
Turn LEFT to stay on COURT SQ/US-33 W.
Turn RIGHT onto W MARKET ST/US-33/VA-42.
Continue on W MARKET ST/US-33/VA-42 for about one mile. You will see a Shell Station on the right.
If you have a GPS or access to Mapquest: I believe the address of the Shell Station is 1010 W Market St Harrisonburg, VA 22801-9001
The campers will leave the Shell Station around 9:45 and head to the meadow where we will set up camp. The non-campers can either meet us at the Shell Station or at the meadow around 10:15. We plan to hit the trails around 10:30.
To get to the meadow follow these directions:
Take Rt33 West out of HARRISONBURG.
In about 10 miles, the road will start climbing and go through a series of switch-backs.
As you near the top of the ridge, look for a left turn lane and take that left.
The road almost immediately goes from pavement to dirt. Take the dirt road to the bottom of the hill. You will see a lake on your left.
When you get to the bottom, you will cross a concrete dam.
The road will fork just after the dam. The main road goes to the right to Flagpole Knob. The left fork goes back to the meadow, which is about 1/4 mile away.
Here is a map of the trails at that section of GWNF. Click on it for a larger/printable image. The meadow is marked on the larger map.
