Yes, we need everyone to write to the FS during this comment period, or they will do as they please. And right now they are not shy about their wishes: to close the trails forever. Even if you aren't planning on attending this event, your voice will make a difference. We need 1000's of letters, not hundreds, so speak up, please!

Tellico update

Here is the link to the study that Southern Four Wheel Drive Assocation (SFWDA) did in preparation for the imminent actions of the FS. Please compare this study with what the FS has found. You will see many things that will help you speak effectively in any letters to the FS.

FYI - This scientific study, which looks at water quality in the Tellico watershed (which is the basis of the Trout Unlimited Notice of Intent (NOI) to sue the USFS), is the direct result of efforts by the SFWDA Rescue Tellico Committee, Blue Ribbon Coalition, United Four Wheel Drive Associations and YOUR DONATIONS TO SFWDA.

SFWDA has been working quietly with lawyers, scientists and engineers to counter the baseless and unscientific emotional accusations made by Trout Unlimited and the Southern Environmental Law Center. We have the FACTS and the SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE to prove that the water quality in the Tellico River Watershed is NOT being damaged by the OHV Area, and in fact meets or exceeds state and national requirements in nearly all areas, and the areas that are not meeting requirements appear directly attributable to other factors besides the OHV Area.

Thanks for your help. If these trails close with the single decision of one Supervisor, just think how easily trails and public land areas will close across the country. Precedents are not something we want.

GSMTR Registrant,

First off, thank you very much for your registration for GSMTR '09!

As I'm sure you are aware, Tellico is under severe threat with a recently announced "temporary" closure until 2011. All along, this years GSMTR was about raising funds for the "Rescue Tellico" effort. Even with Tellico temporarily closed, we are not giving up on supporting and fighting for the cause. So, what does that mean for GSMTR '09?

GSMTR '09 will still happen but it will be a Rally even more highly focused on raising funds for "Rescue Tellico".

The event will run from Thursday thru Sunday, June 18th through the 21st.

We will have a parts swap Friday as well as a Rock Climb Competition
We will have a tug-o-war on Saturday
We will as a group drive through Murphy Saturday to show support for the local community.
We will as a group drive up the skyway and back through trail 1.
We will have a raffle at the event on Saturday
We will have an online raffle
We will have dinner for Friday and Saturday night.
We will donate all profits to the Rescue Tellico fund for the fight to open Tellico back up.

The event will be a pay as you go event. Book your reservations at Crawfords, and pay for meals, raffles etc... at the event.

As far as your currently pre-paid registration dollars, all will be refunded in full. Those of you who wrote checks will receive a check within the next 10 days. Those of you who paid through Paypal, you have a choice of check or Paypal (there are fees associated with that). Please just let me know how you'd prefer to be refunded. If your address has changed from the time you registered, let me know your new address.

And, PLEASE support the "Rescue Tellico" cause, don't change your plans to attend this years GSMTR! This may be the most important event of the year. The cause needs support, financial as well as through a show of support for the community.

Check out our new AD in Toyota Trails mag this month on page 4! Todd K granted us another ad placement for this event to raise awareness. The Upstate Cruisers Registration page will be updated soon with more details on the raffle and itinerary. There will be a new online raffle too. It will likely last a few months (beyond GSMTR weekend) to help us assist SFWDA in raising money.

Both sides are now engaged (Notice of Intent was sent to the FS) and we need to raise funds for the legal team representing SFWDA (and your access to public trails!).

Please everyone, attend this event and show the community and the FS that we support public access to trails our tax dollars pay to maintain.
