All but illegal in the People's Republic of California (sadly). Better to stick with the shotgun and slugs in the Golden State, AIR2AIR. And if you find one that is "legal" today, the law will change as it has so many times and it will become "illegal" as to that variant. You just can't win in CA.

AZ is a far more enlightened State. Outdoor plumbing notwithstanding.
Sometimes you have to choose which battles to fight first and which to put off till later. Here, we choose to deal with the personal rights supported by the Constitution and its Ammendments... but later I'm sure we'll run some sewage pipe and perhaps some electrical wires to the outhouse.

Personally, I'd rather have the rights.

Don't forget to make sure that if you do buy an automatic pistol that you get 10 round mags....not the 12-16rounders available for 9, .40 and .45 calibers.

Sean
You can still get those calibers with the large mags, it's just against the law to sell the gun, new, with the high capacity mags. You can buy them seperately, although they'll set you back a pretty penny.

My response to you Air2Air is, just ask yourself if you really need it. I have guns, think they are cool and fun to shoot, but I have never bought a firearm for "personal defense". I have never been affraid to go out in the "boonies" without a gun. If I was in Alaksa of the beaten path, away from my vehicle, I might want one for protection from bear or the like, but then again, you have bear mace, which is much more affective than handguns against those huge things. Just remember if you do pack to do it legaly and be prepared to take someones life.

I don't know, maybe it's different out there. Maybe you guys have freaks like in "The Devils Rejects", but I've never run accross any situations like that!

In CA you can't legally buy the mags with a capacity exceeding 10 so AIR2AIR doesn't have that option. However, your point is very well taken for others.

Unfortunately they're around - this is California. When you get ready to come for a visit to Disneyland, PM me and I'll take you on a tour.

And while I don't "always" pack, and don't feel the need, I'd feel like a fool if I was standing there with my yank in my hand, far from anywhere and I wasn't able to protect family and friends.

Re: Weapons in the boonies?

Uphill can you explain to me how to or the best way to import firearms back into CA. The guns .22, .357, .45, and AR15H2 are reg. in CA. and in FL. They are my dads and he is very sick and may only have a few years left with us. My mom does not want them and right now the guns are in FL. If I declair them can I just put them in a suitcase and put them on a airplane (of course in the bottom of the plane.) Thanks for the help. Since were on the toppic of guns.

Re: Weapons in the boonies?

My $0.02 on the subject..... The NRA has great gun saftey books for little ones. I think the cost is very low even to non members. Check thier web site and look for "Eddie egal" gun saftey for children.

I DID show both of my childern by the age of eight how to safely shoot and handle firearms, but to NEVER handle them without an adult around.
My daughter was one of the few recruits that could shoot as well asa her instructor in Army basic trainning. He was a little suprised at her ability.
Now if you look where I live, most would not guess I would do such a thing!

I don't know. I think carring a gun is a bad idea. I have a few friends in Law Enforcement and they do not carry an off duty weapon. Their agency does not require them to do so. So they choose not to. I have one friend who is FBI. He has to carry a gun at all times. We goto the same church and I hate the fact he brings it to church under his jacket. I some times bring my dog with me when I go up to Santiago. 80lb Brown Lab. She will jump all over you and lick you to death. I have 4 guns at home. I have not shot them in the last 10 years since I have kids now. This is just me. I know a lot of people out their are a lot more responsible than I will ever be. Good luck with which ever way you choose to go.
I'm a LEO and a firearms instructor and carry all the time. All but one of the guys in my office carries all the time off-duty as well. The one guy that doesn't has explained why he doesn't and it's reasonable.

FBI don't have to carry all the time...they have to carry all the time on duty and are encouraged to carry off duty. I can elaborate via pm/e-mail if you'd like

Why would it bother you that a federal agent has his gun in church? It's certainly not going to jump out and hurt someone on it's own. While it's unlikely that anything would happen in a church, it's not impossible, and something could happen to him on the way to or from church...and by the rules your friend isn't supposed to leave his weapon in his vehicle so he pretty much has to keep it with him.

Re: Weapons in the boonies?

Well all I can say you guys is WOW.

Boy did I wake up to a fascinating thread. Thank you all. And of course I mentioned AZ just as a destination...not the boonies itself!

Reading all this is giving me clarity on the specific issues for me:

1. As fathers and husbands, is this overreacting to the actual threats out there, or is it part of our duties in protecting the family, just like seatbelts?

2. I do not want the family to have any contact with the gun just yet. So I liked the locked box idea. But in a "situation", would I be able to get to it in time?

3. What is a "situation" and how can I recognize that I need to get to the gun?

I really appreciate the input all you guys have made here; you know how important this is...

Re: Weapons in the boonies?

First off, this is an awesome topic. I often wonder who carries when out wheeling. I unfortunately live in Cali. and have to deal with the gun laws here. On the bright side of things, i live in Kern County and we have the highest number of issued CCW's in California. I will be turning in my CCW application here anytime and hopefully all goes well with that an i will be allowed to legally carry concealed.

Thats not the case right now though. I do a lot of my wheeling in the desert. In the middle of nowhere and yes "The devils rejects" or "The hills have eyes" comes to mind. Haha. Seriously though, i see a lot of people out there that carry. Hell, the park ranger while on patrol always wears a bullet proof vest. That says something. Constantly hear random gun shots. I just prefer to carry. I have two carry pieces. Both Sig Sauer, one a P220 (.45acp) and the other a P229 (.40S&W). I shoot on a weekly basis, at least 50 rounds on each gun. Like said before, Better to have a gun and not need it than not have one and need it.

So yes, when i wheel i carry.
