Springfield has a nice compact 1911. 3 inch barrel I think, 7 shot capacity, about $800? I think.
if you want small 1911's, look at the kimber tactical ultra. now that is a nice firearm. i was just checking one out the other day as a buddy of mine just bought one.
you can beat the kimber 1911's. the new customized taurus 1911 is pretty BA, but its just too darn big. if you dont mind spending the cash look into kimber. some that might interest you that are small are.
ultra carry II
tactical ultra
ultra covert II
if you dont mind the size definitly look into the TLE II
Locked box - Unless you've got political connections or contribute to your Sheriff's campaign coffers on a regular basis, you'll NEVER get a CCW in this state.

I think carrying a single action pistol is a bad idea. Especially if you have little training. I grew up around guns and have shot all my life been in the military and been there done that. I had a person try to break into my home last year and I stoped him without firing my weapon but it was a single action .45 that was pretty tricked out. When you are face to face and have the upper hand it is still anyones ball game. In this case they guy was drunk and could have lunged for me or anything. I was not going to shoot him but I did not know that when I ran downstairs with my gun. My point is that when I was standing there (5 min.) until the cop came my adrenilin was pumping and the gun was on target & I was shaking. I didn't want to accidentally pop this dude because I was shaking. So do yourself a favor and get a double action pistol. I went and got an HK USP .40 Compact.
Some of you will probably say I am a pansy for being nervous and shaking etc.... well maybe I am but dont make me prove you wrong.
Be careful where you carry. Certain places are off limits. The place I was riding at this weekend (Eglin AFB reservation) does not allow firearms for personal protection. You can only carry one for hunting and during hunting season. I'd imagine that there are a lot of other parks and reservations with similar rules. I'm all for your right to carry and I think you should excercise it. I'd also reccomend taking a self defense course or educating yourself bye reading up on it. NRA has a great book on self defense. Not at all. I commend your restraint, first of all. An example that your training paid off. Nervous and shaking? An example that you're a compassionate human being. It's what makes you (and most of the rest of us) different from the Michael Vick's of the world.

x2. With very few exceptions, you won't see many law enforcement officers carrying a 1911 style single action auto. And, it's definitely not practical for a first-time gun owner.
As much as I love the 1911's, I still say a quality double-action revolver (i.e., .38/.357) makes for the most reliable and easiest-to-use firearm for anyone brand new to firearms. You can always graduate to something else later.

Well said. If it's your first, get a revolver.

You better check again. There is no CCW reciprocity between Arkansas and California.
That's the main reason I just don't go to CA, period!
Between the two state CCWs I have, legal in 30 some states.
As far as the pole goes, well I don't like any of the options with limited experience. Go out and get some training and go shooting often. you will figure out what the best thing for you is.
Wow, interesting replies ... wow! Here my 2 cents, “Hypothetically,” since I live one foot in CA & one foot in AZ. If I was to carry a gun in CA for remote off road use I would carry a .357 with (4) speed loads 2/.38 sp, 2/.357 in a lock box. In AZ, open carry .357 loaded, for snakes, coyotes and such…
a while back Honu pointed me towards some readings that can be found online. the guys name is massad ayoob. his readings can be found here. Index of free, online articles published in Backwood Home Magazine every gun owner or someone thinking about buying one for personal protection should check this guy out. do youself a big favor and read it. i strongly recommend it.
