off road driving question

Had a great time on some logging roads the other day. I hit some of the unexpected deeper potholes pretty hard, but always head on, and always in control. How fast / slow should I be driving over rough roads to avoid damage? Should I be concerned about damage / alignment etc? I'm not talking about four wheel drive roads, just groomed gravel roads with washboard and potholes.

Thanks for any advice

Just slow enough not to spill your beer out of the solo cup.

Re: off road driving question

eventually, you will learn your vehicle when and where and how...

but think about this... would you rather be tapped on the cheek by a finger, or be hit in the face by mike tyson?

on my subaru STi, i slow down for speed bumps but on my 4runner, it's like "hey! playtime!!!!!"...

for potholes, you might be more concerned of tearing up a tire by going too fast.

It depends on how much disposable income you have to fix things that you break that will not be a warranty item.

Re: off road driving question

truthfully
the small washboards are ok, just rattle you a bit
the potholes you avoid, the break stuff
you put the ruts between the tires, no tires in ruts
generally the answer is like this, the correct line is the easiest
the incorrect line breaks stuff

Re: off road driving question

If you drive at moderate speeds on washboard roads for long periods be sure to check your lugnuts afterwards or your wheel might pass you on the freeway.

Re: off road driving question

I take it slow on washboards, slow enough that the truck is more creeping than being rattled to bits.

All sorts of stuff can loosen otherwise.

Re: off road driving question

Sounds like someone is learning to offroad watching truck commercials on tv. Washboard and potholes are unpredictable. If you don't mind expensive lessons or looking at your FJ in a ditch then the faster the better lol.

I like the Toyota ad where they drive a 4Runner with low profile tires down a mountain at speeds that would quickly roll the vehicle or wrap it around a boulder/tree.

Or both.

Re: off road driving question

How many trucks do you think they just destroy per commercial shoot? I saw a new Ford truck ad that looked like it would have liquified the stunt driver it was so rough. Looked like ol'Mikey Thompson back in the day lol.
