Transmissions / Transfer Cases / Traction AidsThis area is for discussion, questions and problems with the FJ Cruiser's gear train, including topics on A-TRAC, VSC, locking diffs, gear ratios, manual vs. AT, etc.
I have a 2007 AT with 115K and mine is now doing the shuddering thing as described in this post at around 25mph as well as 40mph. When it happens, if I drop it into 4th gear it immediately stops.
I would like to ask those who have had the full transmission flush if that completely cleared up the problem, or if it was more of a temporary fix where the shuddering problem returned at a later date? How many miles have some of you put on your FJ's since the tranny flush?
Please let me know as I dont have $4k to drop on a new transmission. Thanks.
Well, after getting no response to my questions above and having my FJ shuddering more often and through an increasing range of speed, I needed to do something so I took the plunge and got the full transmission flush from my local dealer. The drive home was filled with more shuddering problems but I am very happy to announce that I have had no problems since (2 days)!! I really hope this will solve the issue long term. I think Toyota needs to obviously eliminate the whole "lifetime" transmission fluid thing and make this a regular maintenance item.

Glad to hear you read the thread and took the plunge. Hopefully you didn't wait too long and your torque converter clutch isn't too glazed up.
That WS fluid is great fluid but it's not supernatural like some are led to believe.
Now, if your shuddering is cured, take my advice and dump your trans pan every 30K. 4 quarts of ATF is cheap insurance!

jimmiee your posts have been more than helpful to me. Just wanted to thank you, the OP, and this forum. I have had this problem since I bought my truck with 135k miles on it. I've searched long and hard on Tacoma forums with no answers. I have a 2007 Tacoma trd and spent lots of time trying to diagnose the problem myself.
I have noticed the numerous amounts of 2007 Tacoma/fjs with this problem. I was told by Toyota 1 year ago that they do not service/flush the transmission. Called them 1 week ago requesting a flush and they said that they now do them. I am far out from the original warranty from the previous owner but am curious about any class action lawsuits?
So, read almost all the posts tonight. Got myself an '07 last Friday. 34k miles, 4x4, certified Toyota and Toyota dealer.
It feels and looks amazingly tight all around. But, every 10 or so stops, upon start, when I release the brakes, I get a small bump. I figured it's 'cause I got a truck, not a sports car. I'm still not sure after reading this thread if its something I should worry about, or if I can do anything to address it? Dealers say certifieds have all new fluids, filters, etc. don't k ow if that includes the tranny, but what do you guys think?

I haven't heard of any class action suits yet. Like I mentioned earlier there are several different shuddering problems which are usually lumped together on forums. In real life at the dealership the problems are handled on a case by case basis.
Let us know if your problem is fixed after you get it flushed.

Dropping mine off at the dealer today to have it checked out. I bought it 3 months ago as a Certified Pre-Owned. So, I have the 12K mile warranty AND the Platinum Extended warranty with no deductible.
While changing the fluid could be an option, my concern is what other damage has been done? It's only at 85K...and I plan on putting a ton more on it. I want a good transmission...since I've had bad luck with transmissions. In my 3rd Gen, they also replaced the transmission around the 90K mark. Ugh.
However in the future...I'm definitely doing a drain/refill at each oil change.

Def post back your results. I'm in the exact same boat. '07 FJ, Certified with 34k miles, platinum warranty, etc.
I think I'm taking it in too with the TSB on my iPad to show 'em.
Good luck!
