Transmissions / Transfer Cases / Traction AidsThis area is for discussion, questions and problems with the FJ Cruiser's gear train, including topics on A-TRAC, VSC, locking diffs, gear ratios, manual vs. AT, etc.
They claim that these CV/axles will give our IFS the same strength as a Solid Axle Swap. I doubt the truth of that statement, but maybe they are superior axles for FJ's. I know that several members (MTBcoach) have purchased their upgraded axle components and given positive feedback. I'm thinking about adding a front locker, 4.56 gearing and the Ultimate RCV axles to my rig. At $1000.00 per axle they are pricey, but still cheaper than a solid axle swap and I can keep my 2" extended travel TC/Icon suspension setup (yes, they will build the 2" longer axles for no extra charge). Please add your comments on the merits of the manufacture's claim.

I have the +2" and the RCVs and have not blown mine up yet (and I am one to use front lockers often...and turn the wheel excessively...and hit the gas too much). FJNewb has them with his +3.5" and I believe his likes them; however, I will let him comment.
Well if you consider a Factory FJ CV is almost $500, then to rebuild them for LT set ups with clamps, grease, time... its kinda worth it to me to be done with it and never have to pay for a replacement.
I may consider that option for mine since my last time out, popped one of my CV's
I had RCV's in my last Jeep and they were stupid strong. Yes they are very pricey for the FJ but if you wheel hard and/or use a front locker your front cv's are something you will want to toughen up and with RCVs you will not have to worry about them at all.

The old reviews that mtbcoach and others posted on here are not the same RCV axles as the ones you've referenced. The ones Jerry had ran a 930 inner and a OEM rzeppa outer, but with chrom moly race and cage I believe. The ones you linked have RCVs d60 outer joint.
The d60 outer is definitely an upgrade over the OEM outer joint. The only thing you might need to watch is oversteering the joint and potentially needing steering limits. I haven't put much over 1k miles on mine and only went offroading with them once ( mix of go fast and rock garden). No failures at this point, but there were some signs of early wear on the one axle/joint that we dissassembled. The new owner of Jerry's (mtbcoach) rig managed to blow up the 930 inner joint. Don't know the background or what happend so take it with a grain of salt. However, that's where the concern was for me (even before hearing that from Jerry) since that the outer is beefed up and the inner joint is a good bit smaller than the outer.
Haven't really used them enough to provide valuable feedback.
One issue I'm still trying to address is getting the spherical sealing orange boots to actually seal. They don't really do that right now and tend to toss grease everywhere (spindle, rotor, etc). RCV was supposed to send me some clamps a month ago, but I haven't received any. Its a pretty common issue and I knew that going into buying them and figured I'd pass along, so you aren't surprised if your orange boots end up black.
Customer service wise we dealt with Dan and he was very good to work with. I believe he has now moved to their driveshaft division though.
Funny thing was that when I considered them a while back in 2010 they had a listing on their site. Then it dissappeared for awhile propting me to think they did away with them and now its back. May have to move them back on the front burner...
Thanks for your replies, I went ahead and ordered the axles, front locker, & 4.56 ring and pinion gears. Thanks for the offer and the detailed info FJnewb. I hope meet some of you at Wheeltoberfest or an HHH meeting.

They are definately good insurance when you put in a front locker; I feel much safer turning the steering wheel and such than I would with the oem cvs.
