I think the idea of swapping out the lube is a good idea. What grade lube does the 6spd come filled from the factory with? What grade/brand synthetic lube do you recommend? Will changing to a lube that is not recommended by Toyota possibly invite a warranty repair denial?

From what I understand, not with the MT6. The Auto has some kind of special lube that you're risking it to change to anything but the Toyota stuff.
I've always been an Amsoil guy, I'm thinking that or Redline. Either is just as good as the other, I'm sure.

The MT6 is spec'd for an API Gl-5 rated 75W90 gear lube. As long as you use a good quality lube that meets those criteria, preferably synthetic, you will not have a warranty problem. Choose any brand you like, many here go with Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc.... you won't go wrong.

Depending on the vehicle and the situation, I've downshifted into first.
Not the FJ though. 1st gear is just too high. I shift out of first at like 10mph lol

same here (except the mileage).
And who downshifts into first with the car still rolling, anyway? I was always yelled at for that when taught to drive. As long as I'm barely rolling, it stays in 2nd. My husband (who has only driven the FJ a couple of times) put it into 1st while rolling and I think I'm still suffering the whiplash. Yeah, he got yelled at.

I seriously have an issue engaging to 3rd. when I'm pushing it, it never, ever engages 3rd. I first thought it might be a safety mechanism to repel downshifting to 2nd, but it's just flawed transmission.
i do have trouble sometimes with 2nd and 3rd, but i find it is when the tranny is cold, once it warms up i shifts very smoothly. i also always go into second before shifting into first (after i stop) when i first got it, there seemed to be some hangups getting it into first after coming to a stop.
About to hit 20k and have had the same issue when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, kinda sticks and a bit of a grind. It's always irritated me but I've never really said much to the dealer either. Hmmmm, now that someone else is experiencing it I wonder. I did note this on my survey that toyota sent and they never contacted me.
