Transmissions / Transfer Cases / Traction AidsThis area is for discussion, questions and problems with the FJ Cruiser's gear train, including topics on A-TRAC, VSC, locking diffs, gear ratios, manual vs. AT, etc.
I have been driving my FJ for about two months and 4000 miles now. I have the 6spd Manual Transmission. It seems to me that when I upshift into 2nd and mainly 3rd gear it seems that I feel a bit of gear mis-meshing. It is almost like I am feeling the syncro rings sorta crashing a little or the clutch is still getting a hint of traction. It is nothing very bad but it does make me a little irritated. It seems to do it more noticeably when it is cold. Once the engine warms up it is not as noticeable. Also, downshifting into 1st even at very slow speed takes a bit of a shove on the shift lever sometimes.
Actually it acts a lot like the transmission I had in another vehicle. If you put the lube in that the car maker call for it would bind up the syncros. If you put a lighter lube in it all was great.
A lot of posts on here about getting back into first, some people double clutch, I just easy it in slowly while I'm still barely rolling. It seems easier to get in while your still moving then if you come to a complete stop.

25,000 mi with my 6MT and no weirdness. No trouble shifting into first.
same here (except the mileage).
And who downshifts into first with the car still rolling, anyway? I was always yelled at for that when taught to drive. As long as I'm barely rolling, it stays in 2nd. My husband (who has only driven the FJ a couple of times) put it into 1st while rolling and I think I'm still suffering the whiplash. Yeah, he got yelled at.
I understand the op and his question. Seems i have had my clutch fully depressed and get a little grind. This usually happens going into 5th. This is so rare that it could be me.
As for first, I have had it not want to go many times. As i have said in many threads.... I hold the shifter ever so gently against first and let the clutch out a little, It always pops right in.

Someone suggested I pop it down into second, then right back up into first. Ever since I learned this trick, never had a problem.
I still sometimes get the meshing problem and I agree, it seems to be when the transmission is cooler. Once the gear oil has warmed up and is a little bit thinner, it seems to straighten out. As an attempt to remedy this, I'm going to try swapping out Redline Synthetic in my MT6, transfer case and front/rear diff (like DEWFPO said). Just waiting till 5K to do so...
